True, the upgrade of its USB interface has done little to distinguish the new RME Babyface Pro FS from its predecessor, at least from a purely superficial perspective. Beauty is only skin deep, however, and in fact the new Babyface has undergone a major series of internal improvements: There is the new SteadyClock FS (which is also used in the ADI-2 Pro FS), the new AD/DA converter with improved latency, the improved signal noise characteristics of both mic and line inputs, and the more powerful headphone amp - to name but a few of the fundamental upgrades. One thing that hasn't changed is the number of playback and recording channels, with digital and analogue together reaching a total of 12. As a bus-powered interface, the RME Babyface Pro FS is powered by the USB-C cable that is included as standard, so it can do without a separate power cable.
Thanks to its new AD converter, input latency has been further reduced to a simply astonishing five samples: In practice, this means that the RME Babyface Pro FS needs approximately 0.1 milliseconds to convert the analogue input signal into digital information when using a sampling rate of 44.1kHz. The SteadyClock FS - as used in the ADI-2 Pro FS - ensures an outstandingly low rate of digital transmission errors ("jitter immunity"). The new version's headphone amp now provides the 3.5mm TMS socket with 90mW of output power, as opposed to the earlier model's 70mW. At the same time, the distortion rates have been improved for the two headphone outputs, and the signal/noise ratio of both the mic and line inputs have also been upgraded, to 113.7db for the mic and 116.3dB for the line-in.
Equipped with the latest generation of AD/DA converters, advanced clocking technology, a clear and comprehensible user interface, and improved signal paths, the new RMS Babyface Pro FS RME has absolutely everything needed to satisfy even the most discerning users. The combination of powerful components, a stable driver, a host of functions, and - most importantly - fantastic sound makes the Babyface simply an incredibly compact and versatile audio interface; not only does it bring enough power for studio recording, but it's also great on the road as a bus-powered interface.
RME is a brand of Audio AG based in Haimhausen near Munich, Germany. It enjoys a worldwide reputation and is especially known for offering support for all users of any platform thanks to cross-platform connectivity between Windows and Mac OS via various interface formats. An extensive repertoire of audio interfaces, converters and microphone preamps, all based on innovative and extremely powerful core technologies, offer optimum performance to all RME users. This explains why RME's devices are used in a wide range of applications all over the world. From recording studios and theatres to broadcasting companies and scientific institutions, many users rely on the quality of RME products.
The RMS Babyface Pro FS is bursting with all kinds of technical features, making it capable of a huge range of functions: It has four analogue inputs (which in combination with the digital connections provide a total of 12 input channels), a MIDI connection (which provides both input and output via an external multi-cable, enabling users to connect their favourite sound sources directly), powerful microphone preamps with up to 65dB of gain, and AD/DA converters with incredible latency times. What is more, bus operation means that busy musicians and audio professionals can enjoy all these benefits on the move.
