Modelling stompbox with audio interface

The IK Multimedia ToneX Pedal is a stompbox that offers authentic modelling of amps, cabinets, and overdrive/distortion pedals and comes with IK Multimedia’s advanced AI Machine Modelling Technology and TONEX software that allow musicians to play digital tone models, model their own rigs using the included presets, and share them with other users on the ToneNET platform. This pedal features a USB audio interface with 24-bit/192kHz conversion for excellent studio sound and is perfectly suitable for both guitars and basses thanks to its extended frequency range that goes from 5Hz right up to 24kHz. For maximum usability, the ToneX Pedal's scope of delivery also includes the downloadable TONEX MAX and AmpliTube 5 software as well as a 1.5m USB type A to type B connection cable and a mains power adapter. The device on offer here is the particularly low-priced Special Edition to mark the 70th anniversary of Musikhaus Thomann.

IK Multimedia ToneX Special Edition stompbox pedal with accessories

A versatile companion

The IK Multimedia ToneX Pedal features 150 presets that can be edited by adding a wide range of effects, including a noise gate to eliminate unwanted noise and feedback, a compressor for a fatter sound, an equaliser for optimum frequency control, and stereo reverb for more depth. This stompbox boasts an impressive dynamic range of up to 123dB that allows musicians to add focus and extra punch to their guitar or bass sound. The stereo reverb function can be used to add particular depth to the mono signal of the modelled amp and send the left/right signals to two mono jack outputs. Users can get even more creative by splitting the amp signal into two mono signals via the two outputs. With its MIDI inputs and outputs, the ToneX Pedal is also optimally equipped for integration into a MIDI rig that allows the stompbox parameters to be controlled remotely.

IK Multimedia ToneX Stompbox Pedal Special Edition

For ultimate flexibility

The IK Multimedia ToneX Pedal is an easy-to-use amp modelling tool that is sure to win over guitarists and bassists alike, including those who use a complex pedal board. But experienced musicians are not the only ones who will find the ToneX Pedal to be a useful addition to their high-end gear - beginners will have the ideal tool in their hands for modelling tones with an exceptionally high level of quality in a DAW thanks to the included audio interface. Guitar and bass players of all levels of experience can also use this stompbox without needing to connect it to an amp or PC thanks to the integrated headphone amplifier.

About IK Multimedia

IK Multimedia was founded in 1996 in the small town of Modena in northern Italy. Its two founders, both musicians and engineers, joined forces with the aim of emulating electronic circuits using computer algorithms. Today, IK Multimedia is a multinational company with seven subsidiaries in Italy, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Hong Kong, and the USA and exclusively manufactures products which are perfectly tailored to the needs of musicians, true to its motto “Musicians first”.

Perfect for rehearsal room, stage and recording

With its bright and easy-to-read display, sturdy metal housing, and metal footswitches, the IK Multimedia ToneX Pedal is the perfect choice for those who require a highly reliable stompbox that can be taken just about everywhere, from the rehearsal room to dimly lit stages. The integrated headphone output makes it easy for users to practise at home without disturbing their neighbours' peace and quiet, and the ToneX Pedal can also be connected to a mini PA system instead of a large-size amplifier in order to save space in the rehearsal room. In combination with an external expression pedal, it will also allow musicians to take creativity to the next level during their stage performances. With a weight of roughly 900 grams, this compact stompbox is of course a great solution for those who want to take it with them on a regular basis. What is more, the ToneX Pedal is even suitable for fake reamping of guitar and electric bass recordings in a DAW. The included self-adhesive rubber feet can be applied to prevent the pedal from slipping on any desk in the studio or at home.

Super-accurate recreations of amps and rigs, in a very cost effective way
tone to the bone 02.05.2024
Firstly, the silver finish Tonex Special Edition Thomann version appears at least as nice 'in the metal' as the regular version in my opinion so any preference between the two finishes is very subjective. And as the silver version is currently a lower price than the original black version on Thomann - and being functionally identical - I can see no reason to get the regular black one in preference at the moment.

The Tonex pedal comes with Tonex Max software - quite a sophisticated platform which allows you to get the same tones using your PC/Mac audio interface (stand-alone or in a DAW) and also to capture your own amps and pedals - you need a re-amp box for that (either IK Multimedia's or an alternative). I have not yet tried profile capture but I look forward to trying this when I get a re-amp box sorted out.

Another key feature is the Librarian which allows you to overwrite pedal slots with amps of your choice, having first downloaded, tweaked and auditioned them on the Tonex Max software on your computer. It takes some time to get familiar with the whole 'eco-system', set up sound drivers on a PC or Mac etc - but the software is generally quite intuitive once you get into it.

The Tonex pedal can be used as the audio output device for the Tonex Max software running on your computer. That can be a bit slightly confusing until you get your head round it - I found it helpful watching some YouTube videos that explain this capability quite well.

There is perhaps not a lot to say about Tonex's capability to profile and recreate amps, speakers and drive pedals that has not been said x1000 times already - it is capable of a super accurate recreations of amps and rigs, in a very cost effective way.

Of course each capture is of a rig of some sort, set up a certain way, maybe with a mic and cab, maybe direct amp out - so you may spend considerable time finding something you want from the thousands of captures available (free and for purchase). Also worth mentioning that while you can drive a model harder or quieter and get what feels like a real amp, you may want to switch between multiple profiled captures for different gain ranges. Also the tone stack in the Tonex EQ may not behave exactly as the original amp being profiled, but usually works effectively enough in my experience so far anyway.

It is worth mentioning 'Tonex One', the new IK Multimedia pedal as an alternative option which I assume many will consider, being smaller and at lower cost - I have not tried the Tonex Max personally but it is said to sound identical to a regular Tonex. But having messed with my Tonex for a week or two now, I definitely appreciate the various knobs provided for tweaking EQ, compression, reverb etc. and the display showing the profile name, the value of the adjustment being done to a parameter and deeper editing - a major benefit for me. There are 150 slots available on the Tonex Vs. 24 Tonex One. And the software version provided with the Tonex is more comprehensive - you get Tonex Max and Amplitube 5. For me the extra price that is worth it as I may well use them both for recording. I am not saying Tonex One is not a great product by the way - it looks fantastic for the right sort of use case e.g. "set and forget" simplicity of switching between clean and gain amp. But for those who want to tweak a bit more, and are OK with a larger form-factor, I think the Tonex pedal is probably still a better option.

One thing to bear in mind about Tonex (and most other similar digital pedals) is latency. Tonex has around 3 milliseconds latency which is normally too small to be a problem on its own. Most humans seem to be insensitive to less than around 10 milliseconds latency - but imagine having several such devices in a chain on a board - the latency can soon stack up. And Tonex One is sometimes proposed as a "why not have 2 or 3 of them on a board to model gain/overdrive/distortion/fuzz pedals as well as an amp?". Tonex can certainly model gain pedals quite well but those latencies will add up and if you have other digital pedals in the chain - it may become significant for some users. I know that some people argue against latency as being a real world issue - the typical counter argument is that sound travels 1 metre in 3 milliseconds so it is "just like being 1 metre further away from a speaker" - but I think it sometimes can matter e.g. in some recording setups.

Could Tonex be any better? Well providing additional effects such as delay and chorus etc would be nice to have. I would love to see a convolution reverb capability too - but I realise that is would be a lot more DSP and cost. A post amp-pre-speaker effect loop would be useful, but each loop on a digital device inevitably means more latency as there is an additional AD/DA stage, so I suppose "it depends".

One minor point to mention is I was surprised to find that I had to update the new Tonex as received in order to get a firmware version with a working tuner - a newly added feature apparently and I can confirm this works great and makes excellent use of the display.

Also I almost forgot to mention Tonex also sound very convincing with bass rig captures - I have tried several with bass guitar and was seriously impressed.

In summary, great pedal, great tones, great value, very highly recommended.

Very nice practice profiler
AngryDucky 13.05.2024
Pros:
Many amps already profiled for you
Lightweight
Inexpensive
Very accurate sound
Amazing software support.

Cons:
You're limited to 44,1 kHz, 24 bits or 16 bits
Not easy to move presets between Amplitone and Tonex.

Bottom line:
Extremey good profiler to keep on a pedalboard especially if you are into heavy music

Sigh...
Samurai997 15.05.2024
This is a hard review to write... On the positive side, some of the captures are REALLY good. I bought this mainly for high-quality, high-gain sounds - and there are some excellent 3rd-party tone models that sound absolutely great.

HOWEVER, this is the most infuriating, badly-designed, user-UNfriendly piece of music equipment I have ever bought. Sure, it's much cheaper than a Kemper or a QuadCortex - but that shouldn't mean it's so frustrating to use. The display is idiotic, it's only one line and so it can't even display the full name of most presets. The fact it has USB-B and not USB-C is also bizarre. The manual is confusing and badly written, the software is buggy and also user-unfriendly (why do I need to create a separate account at Tone.net but apparently use the same username as my IK Multimedia account?). There are many shortcomings to using this pedal - I bought a Simplifier X, which looks far more complicated but it's so intuitive and easy to use I only had to consult the manual once!

Summary: some excellent third-party captures provide access to some really good, and often quite unusual, amps, pedals and cabinets. This is the plus point - the frustrating software, horrible user experience, bad support from IK Multimedia means I've spent more time trying to work out to use this thing than acutally appreciating the sounds!

PS If you don't care about captures and just want a decent amp and cab modeller, the BOSS IR-2 is fantastic in every respect.
