The 4th Generation Scarlett 2i2

Front view of the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th Generation 2-channel USB 2.0 audio interface with controls and switches

The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th Generation – a USB-C audio interface for Mac and PC – comes with two balanced line inputs for connecting synthesizers or other line-level audio devices and two balanced outputs, which will most often be used for monitoring purposes. Alternatively, microphones can be connected to two XLR input sockets located at the back of the device. The two Scarlett microphone preamps deliver superior sound quality, 48V of phantom power, and (as a new addition to the 4th Generation) a re-engineered Air mode comprising the Presence and Harmonic Drive functions. Electric guitars and electric basses can also be connected directly to the jack inputs and the impedance adjusted accordingly. All in all, the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th Generation represents a superb and visually appealing interface at an attractive price.

Love is in the "Air"

Focusrite has earned an excellent reputation during its thirty years of building microphone preamps and, with the addition of the Presence and Harmonic Drive functions, has now succeeded in making the 4th Generation version even more appealing. The optional Air mode Presence adds treble when recording, delivering – in Focusrite's own words – "high-end details for vocals, acoustic guitar or cymbals", and emulating the sound of this traditional British manufacturer's legendary studio console. The Harmonic Drive function boosts mid-range harmonics, making it ideal not only for electric guitars, among other instruments, but also for certain vocals.

Dynamic duo

As a desktop interface with compact dimensions, the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is particularly suitable for home and bedroom studios. Powered by USB, the device is lightweight, despite its robust construction, and therefore portable. The two flexibly configured inputs and the two outputs (for use with active monitors, for example) should more than satisfy any connection requirement. The newly revised Gain Halos (coloured LED rings around the gain controller) make it even easier to check input levels. Unlike some of the larger models in the Scarlett series, the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th Generation is not equipped with a MIDI input and output; however, as many keyboards available today already come with a built-in USB interface allowing direct connection to a computer, this should not pose too much of a problem.

About Focusrite

Founded in 1985 by Rupert Neve, Focusrite quickly made a name for itself with high-quality analogue consoles. Today, the company markets audio interfaces, mic preamps, consoles, analogue EQs, and channel strips as well as hardware and software for digital audio processing. The company is based in High Wycombe, England, and has won numerous industry awards. In addition to the Focusrite Pro line, the company also has subsidiaries that include Adam Audio, Novation, and iOS app creator Ampify Music.

Hit the ground running

For aspiring producers who are looking to start recording immediately after purchasing the interface, Focusrite has also included an Easy Start tool and put together a comprehensive software package comprising Ableton Live Lite, a three-month subscription to Pro Tools Artist, and the Hitmaker Expansion bundle, which includes guitar sounds from the Softube Marshall Silver Jubilee 2555, pitch adjustment options for vocals from Antares Auto-Tune, reverb effects from Relab LX480 Essentials, and the "Addictive Drums 2: Studio Rock" virtual drumming instrument from XLN Audio. The Studio Grand Piano from XLN Audio Addictive Keys is also accessible and the Focusrite Red Plug-in Suite provides an entire channel strip complete with EQ, de-esser, compressor, limiter, gate, and expander. And the icing on the cake: The package also comes with a two-month subscription to Landr Studio mastering tools, allowing those final touches to be added to any project.

No noise, perfect as a DAC
Matttttttttttt 17.10.2023
Have an outboard micpre, line in with no gain on the device, sounds really nice. Most important for this set up is converting to digital, and there is really no noise at all detectable. great value and works really well.

Only thing is, off button would be nice in future, or like, if the second power USB when plugged in, disables power from the usb from computer - so it can be switched off without unplugging. For now it just stays plugged in and lit up.

More gain for the mic but some problems with Windows 11
MatasM 25.01.2024
If you get problems with Windows 11 make sure to optimize it like I had to do. I thought it was hardware problem but its probably windows updates... now it works like it should.

This one can make others of the same price seem inferior
Doctor Boomer 20.04.2024
This is a really good Interface, tried quite a few before, but I'm very happy with the purchase of this one, really liked that I can sync both inputs into one knob for a awesome stereo setup recording, and the shell is VERY sturdy, perfect for recording my instrument on the go in church and live streaming, and not worry about breaking. And the plugins that come for free with the interface are also a very good treat which makes the overall price of the item really a bang for the buck and affordable for such a high quality and nice sounding plugins. The only that can compete with this one in the same price range in my opinion is the SSL 2.
