Not my favorite

h a v, 30.07.2015
Not sure why this mic became so popular, as I don't find its character useful on enough sound sources to warrant the price. It has a lot of weight in the lower frequencies, and a lot of sparkle on top. The lower mid is rather scooped, so you essentially get a smiley face type of character. This can of course be useful, but in real life this is mostly for getting dull sound sources to rise and shine.

I think it's excellent on raspy male voices that need all the clarity they can get. I've also used it on upright bass, and on some occasions on some acoustic guitars that needed to be brought to life. It would probably have been good in front of a kick drum, if it had been equipped with a pad. It hasn't, and its output is really hot as it is?so in front of louder sound sources, it will basically give you line level signal which is not something all microphone preamps are comfortable with. So it's useless for drums.

Brauner Phantom Classic vs Neumann TLM 103

Rabaukendisko, 26.10.2015
I was looking for a very good microphone and let me get the Brauner Phantom Classic and the Neumann TLM 103. If one compares the two microphones of the price / performance ratio, one has haptically and visually the Brauner more. It looks more stylish, there is a super cable, a brilliant spider and a decent aluminum case. The Neumann comes with a simple spider (which is individually decidedly overpriced), without cable in a padded cardboard box.

The Neumann itself is impeccably processed and also sounds damn good. Above all, it is universally applicable, which makes it very attractive as a general purpose weapon. Now I have however already several other microphones I use for instruments, therefore the focus was with the TLM 103 on singing. Here it could be compared to my already existing clear points, but the Brauner was very understated. The voice was perfectly captured by the 103, long rumbng with the EQ absolutely unnecessary. The Brauner has a more beautiful sound here, the voice is given a clarity and, above all, a melody that Neumann simply could not. The Brauner voice can be mixed even more into the music, where the Neumann is almost sharp-edged due to its linearity.

Whoever is looking for a rather superficial, random singer microphone will be very happy with the Neumann, because for such a purpose the TLM 103 is predestined.
