Extended low end

Harley Benton SC-Custom III Baritone AB Electric Guitar

Baritone guitars give players a tonal range that extends far below that of regular models, all while maintaining clarity and definition - and the Harley Benton SC-Custom III Baritone AB stays true to this concept with a scale length of 712mm (28") and a duo of Tesla TM VR-Nitro AlNiCo-5 humbuckers. The longer scale length means a comfortable string tension and a tight playing feel even at lower tunings. Both the body and the set neck are made of meranti, creating a solid foundation with balanced sustain and stability. Visually, the matt Army Burst finish emphasises the distinctive character of the instrument, combining the classic single-cut shape with a distinctly modern look, the result being a guitar that focuses less on vintage nostalgia and more on power, clarity, and controlled depth.

Thunder from down under

Despite its longer scale length, the Harley Benton SC-Custom III Baritone AB maintains a balanced and comfortable playing feel, with a Modern C neck profile measuring 20mm at the first fret and 22mm at the twelfth fret that sits naturally in the hand without feeling bulky. The rosewood fingerboard, which has a 12" radius, provides a comfortable string action and ensures that players can bend even heavier strings without fret buzz. The design is rounded out by reliable hardware, too: A WSC Tune-o-Matic bridge ensures precise intonation and smooth action, while a graphite nut improves tuning stability and reduces friction at the headstock end, while the 22 extremely durable medium jumbo stainless steel frets from Blacksmith provide consistent playability and, alongside the white binding, contribute to a clean, well-crafted overall appearance.

Flexible pickup configuration

The Harley Benton SC-Custom III Baritone AB is equipped with two Tesla TM VR-Nitro AlNiCo-5 humbuckers, which provide a tight low end with clear definition and ensure that even very low tunings remain precise and well structured. Chords maintain their clarity while each note stands out clearly, making the guitar equally suited to powerful rhythm playing and articulate lead parts. Separate volume controls allow the player to precisely balance the two pickups, while the push/pull tone control gives them access to leaner, more transparent tones that are perfect for clean passages or multi-track recording in the studio via coil splitting. The classic three-way switch selects between the neck pickup, both pickups or the bridge pickup, ensuring quick and intuitive control.

For expanded soundscapes

The Harley Benton SC-Custom III Baritone Army Burst will primarily appeal to guitarists seeking to work with an extended tonal palette, and those who favour lower tunings – whether in modern Metal, Post-Rock, or Doom – will find this instrument to be a valuable addition to their arsenal. Its 28" scale length ensures a tight and focused low end, which is crucial for drop tunings or complex chords in the lower register, and because the two Tesla TM VR-Nitro AlNiCo-5 humbuckers are splittable, the sonic spectrum remains versatile and capable of handling clean passages or contrasting arrangements. Beginners with no experience of longer scale lengths may find the change unfamiliar at first, but ambitious players with a clear stylistic focus will find this a specialised tool offering excellent value for money.

About Harley Benton

Since 1998, the Harley Benton brand has been catering for the needs of numerous guitarists and bassists. In addition to an extensive range of stringed instruments, Thomann's house brand also offers a wide choice of amplifiers, speakers, effect pedals, and other accessories. In total, the range includes over 1,500 products. Built by established names in the industry, all Harley Benton products combine quality and reliability at attractive and affordable prices. The continuous expansion of the range ensures that Harley Benton always provides new, exciting, and innovative products that keep players perfectly in tune with the musical world, day after day.

From Metal and Indie to experimental projects

When playing in a band, the Harley Benton SC-Custom III Baritone AB really comes into its own whenever the arrangement calls for depth and punch without drowning out the bass range. Precise riffs in low tunings translate cleanly and with articulation in Metal productions, especially in combination with tightly dialled-in high-gain amps or modern modelling systems. At the same time, the Tesla humbuckers deliver surprisingly balanced results even on classic tube amps, e.g. for gritty Blues or Stoner sounds with plenty of low end. In the studio, the long scale length of the Harley Benton SC-Custom III Baritone AB opens up interesting layering possibilities, for example, when baritone parts are combined with standard guitar tracks to create a wider and deeper sound. The coil split function also allows more transparent clean tones or lightly driven Indie-Style sounds, expanding the instrument’s versatility and making it an appealing option for creative studio work and experimental projects.

SC Custom III Baritone

I am a beginner / intermediate player, this is my 5th guitar from Thomann, I just received it today, it was the first time I played a baritone. I had previously bought the SC Custom III (purple burst) which is an excellent instrument with great features! Well, the baritone version is simply amazing! Beautiful finish, beautiful color, comfortable to play, the pick ups are great to my taste. Locking tuners would have been great and I personally think that the headstock could look nicer with something else instead of the “Custom III” label. A version with active pick ups would be amazing!

VP
The value is absolutely insane!
Victor Pa. 28.03.2026
To start off, the transport packaging was very premium, all padded inside the box and double-bagged and that left a really good unboxing impression.
The guitar is definitely a looker! The Army Burst matt finish looks very good IRL. I was coming in expecting imperfections here and there for this price point, but this exceeded all of my expectations! The only issue from my first impression was the neck volume pot's knob basically falling off, but that is an easy fix to make it stick again ;)
The biggest positive surprise was definitely how thin the neck is for a baritone of this scale and that there is no heel for the set neck! The comfort and playability is truly immaculate. Stainless steel frets and a graphite nut at this price point also show that these (along with the premium-feling neck) are not features that should be paywalled by a four-digit price point. Eat your heart out, *insert any popular guitar brand*!
These Tesla pickups also sound quite crisp for heavier music with distortion, but as they are a bit more on the medium overall output side, with coil-split the signal get's very noticeably weaker.
Overall my quality rating is a 4,5* due to the knob falling off, 4,5* due to the low output coil-split and a full 5* for features as as a whole this guitar is a great package with an awesome neck that's tough to beat even at 2x the price.

Absolute beast of a baritone
Count Doogula 20.02.2026
Absolutely brilliant guitar for the price. The features list speaks for itself (locking tuners would have made it perfect, but that's not a huge issue), but what really blew me away was the fit and finish. This isn't just a bunch of boxes being ticked off and hastily assembled into something resembling an instrument. The finish is flawless, the fretwork is top notch, the nut is cleanly cut, I mean seriously, I live in Australia so it had quite the journey, and when I took it out of the box it was in tune.

If you're looking for not only an entry point into baritone guitars, but an overall great instrument, I strongly recommend the SC Custom 3.

It chugs hard.

Richtig gutes Teil
sunrider666 12.03.2026
