The TC Helicon Perform‑V is an easy‑to‑use vocal processor in a very compact format. Alongside classic vocal effects like reverb, echo, and doubling, its feature set also includes a pitch corrector and even a megaphone effect. The Perform-V has an XLR input for connecting microphones, which can also be run with 48V phantom power. Stereo signals can be fed in through the AUX input, making it possible, for example, for karaoke fans to simply hook up their smartphone and sing along with their favourite tracks. For accurate monitoring of the output signal, there's also a headphone output on the front panel; to keep things simple, though, TC Helicon's Adaptive Tone technology takes care of automatic level control. All of these controls are neatly arranged in a circle of colour-coded physical buttons, an intuitive layout that makes it quick and easy to dial in a studio‑ready sound capable of highlighting the unique nuances of any singer's voice.
With its intuitive user interface, singers have instant access to all the TC Helicon Perform‑V's internal effects at the touch of a button – or buttons: The three large buttons on the left are clearly labelled Double, Reverb, and Echo. When an effect is activated, its button lights up green. For the only marginally more complex Harmony, Megaphone, HardTune, and μMod effects, the Perform-V's smartphone app is capable of "beaming" the settings directly to the device, even without an internet or Bluetooth connection. The μMod package comprises modulation effects like flanger and chorus, and the three main effects can be edited right on the device, simply by holding down the button in question and using the rotary control to set its level. Turning the dial fully to the right will activate one of the effects' different styles: Each effect comes with three styles as standard, and a fourth can be loaded into the Perform‑V via the preset "beaming" function.
The TC Helicon Perform‑V is suitable both for beginners and more experienced musicians – in fact anyone who wants to enhance their vocals with easy‑to‑use effects. One thing that really helps on a poorly-lit stage are the illuminated buttons, and artists will always have their favourite effects close at hand, because the Perform‑V is designed to be mounted right on a mic stand. Thanks to the device's internal 48V phantom power, it can even be used with high‑quality condenser microphones, often the best option for vocals. Whatever the quality of the mic they're using, though, singers will find that the Perform-V's Adaptive Tone function will add something to their voice, with its internal EQ and the gating, compression, and de‑esser functions: The de‑esser removes sibilants, while the gate only opens when vocals are present, eliminating noise during instrumental passages. For all its functionality, the Perform‑V is small enough to fit into any bag, so it's always ready to go.
TC-Helicon was founded in 2000 as a subsidiary of TC Electronic in cooperation with IVL Technologies Ltd. and has since specialised in voice recording technology. TC-Helicon focuses primarily on portable audio interfaces. The product range also includes various signal processors designed for the voice, in the form of effect pedals or compact devices with microphone stand mounts. Since 2015, TC Helicon has belonged to Music Tribe, the holding company of Behringer, which has brought brands such as Midas and Klark Teknik under one roof.
The TC Helicon Perform‑V has three preset slots where users can save their favourite sound settings, making it easy to switch between two wholly different effects during a performance – when moving from the verse into the chorus or vice versa, for instance. Existing presets can be managed – and new ones can be created – on any smartphone or computer using the Perform‑V Preset App, or TC Helicon's VoiceSupport software. Each preset can be made up of as many as seven individual effects; to keep it simple, there's also a "Talk" function that quickly allows announcements to be made without any effects at all. For further flexibility (especially useful for solo performers) there's a connection for an external foot pedal on the rear of the device, leaving both hands free for playing an instrument during a performance. One final, very handy way of controlling the Perform‑V is to use one of TC Helicon's vocal mics – the MP‑75 and MP‑76 have integrated controls for activating the manufacturer's effects processors.
