A handy-sized parlour on a budget

Harley Benton Custom Line CLP-15ME, 00-size parlour guitar with pickup

Parlour guitars are characterised by their compact dimensions, short scale length, and 12th-fret neck transition - features that made these instruments perfect for playing in the intimate settings of the parlour, where they were a common sight during the Victorian period and from which the name derives. The Harley Benton Custom Line CLP-15ME stays true to this classic design, and its size naturally emphasises the guitar's midrange response while also making it very easy to handle. This last characteristic, together with the attractive price tag, make the CLP-15ME a great guitar for picking up whenever the urge to play takes hold - whether it's on holiday or on the sofa. And with the D'Addario strings it comes with right from the factory, the CLP-15ME will capably handle everything from Folk to Blues. For added versatility and convenience, the guitar also features a preamp system with a built-in tuner.

Small but punchy

As mentioned above, the Harley Benton Custom Line CLP-15ME's parlour design means that its body is on the smaller side - 00 size, to be precise. The sapele mahogany body, which has a matt-textured finish, features a top that's made from Gabon mahogany (also known as okoume) and reinforced with scalloped X-bracing. This combination of woods together with the guitar's body size makes for plenty of midrange presence with a more understated low end, and if the acoustic volume reserves are not sufficient, the Fishman Presys-II preamp system will also come in handy. The okoume neck boasts a comfortably slim taper with a modified oval C profile, in contrast to which the 18-fret pau ferro fingerboard measures a generous 45mm at the bone nut and, like the slotted headstock with its open-geared machine heads, is clearly reminiscent of classical guitars. The CLP-15ME's short 628mm scale length, 12th-fret neck transition, and eyecatching mother-of-pearl snowflake inlays all serve to highlight the guitar's compact yet appealing looks.

It's all about the mids

The Harley Benton Custom Line CLP-15ME's construction means it is sure to find favour among players who like a mid-heavy sound; the low end is rather more understated, but that is not necessarily a bad thing since, in a band context, the guitar's place is very much in the middle of the frequency spectrum. This sonic characteristic also makes the CLP-15ME eminently suited to fingerpickers who play solo as well as for guitarists who perhaps cut their teeth on the classical guitar before transitioning to steel-string - the latter group will also appreciate this model's somewhat wider fingerboard. Thanks to its ability to cut through, a result of its small body size, this guitar is a very good choice for buskers and street musicians, especially if they play Folk or Blues. So whether they are looking for a compact and affordable guitar to take on their travels - or just to the couch for a little jam - or for a reliable instrument to take on stage, acoustic guitarists can definitely risk a closer look at the Harley Benton Custom Line CLP-15ME.

For every occasion

A guitar that will go wherever the player goes is never a bad thing to have, and that is what guitarists get with the Harley Benton Custom Line CLP-15ME: Its compact size means it can be kept close at hand when relaxing on the sofa and easy to pick up and play if inspiration suddenly strikes. It also has plenty to offer in a live performance setting, where its punchy midrange presence is sure to cut through the mix on stage or through the crowd noise when playing out in public - and its onboard Fishman preamp system means that the guitar can be amplified if it isn't loud enough on its own. More specialised techniques such as fingerpicking and slide/bottleneck playing are also no problem thanks to the CLP-15ME's cutting, mid-heavy response, so it will capably handle everything from Classical pieces through to Folk and Blues.

J
A lovely little guitar at any price
Jimbike 26.05.2017
I have been looking for a small guitar with a wider nut, comfortable for the sofa, that compressed sound but still sweet and have been looking at expensive ones I can't stretch to those at the moment so gave this a go.

Well my wife is sure they have sent me the wrong guitar.

From the box it looks beautiful, very neatly made, no stray glue, classy inlays, no sharp fret ends, bone nut and saddle. The nut was well cut, the action was a little high for me but easily sorted.
Playing, the sound is very good, the bass is clear and has that mahogany mellowness, strong midrange and not too trebly highs. All very clear with good sustain and volume.

The neck is comfortable and not too wide. I was amazed to find the frets are perfectly level. I have played a few guitars of various prices and very few have perfect frets. I cannot find a note that chokes even on the unplayable end. Plugged in sounds better than my expensive guitar.
The only thing that lets it down are the plastic bridge pins.

I love this guitar at any price

Update: After two years the neck is slightly twisting but not fatal yet.

M
Incredible value - needs a setup
MoDizzle 12.08.2022
I purchased this guitar as a starter guitar for my partner and I initially gave it a setup. It played fine when arriving but the frets needed polishing (very scratchy) the nut slots needed to be lowered and the saddle height also needed to be lowered to make the action nice for a beginner.

After this was done, the guitar played nicely and more importantly, sounded really nice. It has a pokey parlour sound, and is rich and sweet. 80/20 bronze strings help to keep clarity as i found phosphor bronze ended up getting a bit lost.

The finish is super thin and chips off easily so beware of that and it can gloss up easily. Using 0000 steel wool with the grain keeps the matte look.

Overall I'm super impressed with the guitar and dont hesitate to recommend it.

Io
Difficult to put down.
I own a Harley. (Benton). 29.03.2022
Love the size. Great for sitting on the couch, better than a bulky dreadnaught. Has good sound, projects fairly loud for its size. Set up nicely right out of the box. I like the snowflak inlays although a little difficult to get used to the 7th and 9th frets having double snowflakes. When I think I am sliding up to the 11th fret, it turns out I only went to the 8th. Lol. I'll get used to it. I'm not too happy about the "eye of Horus" inlay on the 12th fret. It might just give me cause to buy the Harly 100 series parlor with the round inlays.
All in all, I do like it.
