Dynamics, sustain, fuzz, and tons of output
The EarthQuaker Devices Hizumitas is a fuzz pedal that has been created in collaboration with the Japanese musician Wata, guitarist in the experimental rock band Boris: The Hizumitas is based on a very special Elk BM Sustainar hand-picked from her personal collection. Of course, every vintage fuzz is uniquely dynamic, with minute manufacturing variations delivering unpredictable results – so Jamie Stillman and his team took a close look at Wata's favourite pedal. The Hizumitas captures the magic of the original, delivering a dynamic fuzz with massive output and seemingly endless sustain. It's been expressly designed to cut through in a full band mix, and it sounds phenomenal not just on guitar, but on bass too.
Show no mercy
Despite its simple layout, the EarthQuaker Devices Hizumitas is far more versatile than a guitarist familiar with three-knob fuzzes would think at first glance. Volume, Tone, and Sustain interact with each other to create everything from huge low-end sounds that give new meaning to the phrase "wall of sound", all the way through to mid-focused, punchy fuzz tones that will cut through a band mix with ease. The Volume control, when nudged to just 9 or 10 o'clock, will match the guitar's clean output, so beyond that there's plenty of headroom to mercilessly boost, boost, and boost again. Sustain adds gain and compression, and will respond very differently depending on the instrument and amp. From tight, controlled riffs to soaring, singing leads, pretty much anything is on the table.
Born for the stage
Anyone looking for a vintage-style fuzz that's been built from the ground up to be played in a band is sure to declare the EarthQuaker Devices Hizumitas as their new favourite pedal. The complex interactivity of its controls means it's equally suited to bass or guitar, though its huge dynamic range does makes it a little more sensitive than most fuzz pedals – that's a good thing, of course! Similarly, it reacts differently depending on the amp and guitar it's being used with, really letting the character of the rest of the rig come through; again, not something that's true of every fuzz. The Hizumitas won't disappoint anyone who's after a fuzz that can cut through the mix, handle a variety of styles, and switch effortlessly between bass and guitar.
About EarthQuaker
EarthQuaker Devices was founded in 2004 by the musician Jamie Stillman, who had previously gathered years of experience in the world of music and sounds as the manager of a record label for Metal, Punk, and Shoegaze bands. Today, his innovative pedal designs are among the most in-demand and desirable devices in the boutique segment, attracting interest from a huge community of musicians. Stillman is now in charge of a sizeable team of developers and technicians, who are continuously working from their base in Akron, Ohio to expand their catalogue of hand-made effects pedals. EarthQuaker Devices are used by renowned artists like Paul Simon, Coldplay, Tom Bukovac, Idles, and The Black Keys.
Don't chase the fuzz, let the fuzz come to you
Finding just the right fuzz sounds can feel like the work of a lifetime! The challenge here comes from the fact that a fuzz can seem very different when played solo than when it's used with other instruments – and thus frequencies. The reason is simple: Fuzz tones can sometimes get muddy, or lack the mids and pure volume needed to really cut through. If the acoustics themselves are problematic, this can all quickly become quite an issue. With the EarthQuaker Devices Hizumitas, on the other hand, even a relatively unexperienced musician can dial in the right fuzz fast, shaping it to suit the rig and the room without sacrificing sound quality. Compared to the vintage one-off that inspired it, the Hizumitas is far more user-friendly, running on standard 9V DC and working with any regular pedalboard power supply.
