The EarthQuaker Devices Dispatch Master V3 is one the American boutique pedal-maker's real success stories – a modern classic that can be found on the boards of some of the biggest names in the guitar world. Why? Because it does what it does effortlessly and effectively! The pedal combines a reverb and a hi-fi delay in a compact device with just four controls, which means it's easy for musicians to dial in anything from quick slapback delays with a touch of reverb to full-on ambient soundscapes – delivering a seriously impressive sound quality whether it's used with bass, guitar, or synths.
The EarthQuaker Devices Dispatch Master V3 can be operated in one of three different ways – reverb, delay, or both combined. Switching between them is as simple as rolling back either the Repeats or Reverb control entirely, which means users can also blend seamlessly between the two on the fly. Depending on this key setting, the other controls take on different roles: In reverb-only mode, there's a reverb mix control, with the Reverb dial controlling the length of the effect and Time tweaking its tonal character. The delay controls stay the same in both the combo mode and delay-only mode: Mix sets how much delay is in the signal, Repeats determines the number of repeats, and Time controls the delay's length. In combo mode, the Reverb knob itself becomes the reverb mix, with the other functions then unavailable.
A delay with hi-fi clarity works well in all kinds of musical settings, whether it's for an ambient wash or to give soaring guitar solos some extra body – it's a feature that lets musicans get creative quickly, with a concept that's easy to get to grips with and flexible enough to tweak. The big plus with the EarthQuaker Devices Dispatch Master V3 is that it also comes with a really stunning reverb onboard, so there's no need to spring for an extra pedal. Both effects can kick in with a single stomp, and if delay isn't on the setlist, there's a lush reverb ready to go in seconds too. For anyone after a time-based pedal that skips the learning curve and seemingly endless menus while still delivering outstanding sound quality, this hand-wired combo has everything covered.
EarthQuaker Devices was founded in 2004 by the musician Jamie Stillman, who had previously gathered years of experience in the world of music and sounds as the manager of a record label for Metal, Punk, and Shoegaze bands. Today, his innovative pedal designs are among the most in-demand and desirable devices in the boutique segment, attracting interest from a huge community of musicians. Stillman is now in charge of a sizeable team of developers and technicians, who are continuously working from their base in Akron, Ohio to expand their catalogue of hand-made effects pedals. EarthQuaker Devices are used by renowned artists like Paul Simon, Coldplay, Tom Bukovac, Idles, and The Black Keys.
It's not just its sonic capabilities that make the EarthQuaker Devices Dispatch Master V3 so special – its usability means it also caters to the needs of modern musicians. It features noiseless, relay-based circuitry and a soft-touch footswitch as well as true bypass switching, so that it'll leave the original sound untouched if it's switched off. On stage or in the studio, this pedal is a real secret weapon – even new owners will be able to find their way around in no time, so they can get straight to tweaking the parameters to really nail their desired sound. In a pedalboard setup, reverb and delay pedals should be placed last in the signal chain for the clearest, most natural feel. This pedal works with any standard pedalboard power supply, drawing 78mA at 9V DC.
