Hybrid connectivity, hi-res sound

The AKG N9 Hybrid is a closed-back, over-ear headphone that combines high-quality audio performance with thoughtful ergonomics, extensive connectivity – including multiple wireless options – and advanced sound optimisation features. Its primary focus is to deliver a detailed and balanced sound that will appeal to audiophiles across a wide range of musical styles and listening contexts. At the same time, the N9 Hybrid incorporates practical day-to-day features such as an integrated microphone, low-latency wireless operation, and seamless switching between multiple devices via Bluetooth and its dedicated 2.4GHz USB-C dongle. With both passive and active noise cancellation, as well as onboard EQ and selectable sound profiles accessible via a dedicated app, it transitions easily between everyday listening duties, work-related communication, and immersive listening.

Pristine sound, intuitive control

The AKG N9 Hybrid's 40mm dynamic drivers, paired with Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) diaphragms, deliver a natural, finely detailed sound across an extended frequency range of 20Hz–40kHz. Linear in response, the N9 Hybrid maintains a controlled low end, clear mids, and well-defined highs, revealing subtle layers and fine detail that might otherwise remain masked. It retains composure at higher listening levels, with low distortion contributing to a stable and consistent audio image. This clarity carries across all playback modes, whether via Bluetooth, the 2.4GHz dongle, or high-resolution codecs such as LDAC. Yet operation is invariably straightforward, with intuitive button controls for playback and an earcup control wheel for volume adjustment, allowing quick, unobtrusive changes during use.

Advanced ANC

The AKG N9's closed-back design combines effective passive isolation with advanced active noise cancellation (ANC), digitally reducing external noise while preserving overall tonal balance. The Ambient Aware function allows users to control how much of their environment is reintroduced, adapting to different contexts depending on whether greater awareness of the surroundings or a more focused environment is required. TalkThru mode automatically lowers playback volume when speech is detected, allowing listeners to continue conversations without removing their headphones, while ANC can be set to various levels, including independently of any audio input to create a silent space. Additional settings are accessible via the dedicated app, where EQ presets and personalised sound profiles can be adjusted to suit different listening preferences.

Flexible workflow

The N9 Hybrid offers a versatile connection system suited to a wide range of working and listening scenarios. Alongside Bluetooth 5.3, the 2.4GHz USB-C dongle it ships with provides a stable, low-latency link with support for high-resolution audio transmission, making the N9 suitable for video, streaming, and other latency-sensitive applications; a USB-A adapter is included for broader compatibility. Multipoint functionality allows two devices to remain connected simultaneously, enabling seamless switching between a smartphone and a computer. A detachable 3.5mm jack cable is also included for wired operation, ensuring compatibility with virtually any source. This hybrid approach is highly reliable and adapts to different use cases, from mobile listening to working at a desk, without requiring constant reconnection or manual configuration.

About AKG

AKG was founded in Vienna, in 1947, by Dr. Rudolf Goerike and Ernst Pless. After only a few months, the first AKG microphones were already being used for the first time in radio stations and theatres. AKG's big breakthrough occurred during the early 1950s, with some very sophisticated innovations that were unique in their field. One example is the C12, the first large-diaphragm condenser microphone with remote-controlled, switchable polar patterns – the first client to acquire them was the BBC in London. AKG is today a world-renowned brand in many different fields. With countless high-class products in its range, such as the well-known C414, the name AKG has always been synonymous with quality and outstanding sound.

Audio quality is top priority

Combining lightweight construction with long-term comfort, the AKG N9 Hybrid is well suited to extended listening sessions across different environments. Weighing just 281g, it remains comfortable to wear throughout the day, with cushioned, replaceable ear pads and a well-balanced headband contributing to a secure and comfortable fit. Battery performance is equally well judged, offering up to 100 hours of playback in Bluetooth mode, with a full charge taking around three hours. Fast charging further enhances usability, providing up to six hours of playback from just ten minutes of charging. This combination of sound quality, comfort, autonomy, and versatility – supported by advanced personalisation features such as hearing-based calibration and a well-developed software environment – gives the AKG N9 Hybrid a distinctive edge across everyday listening, work scenarios, and more demanding audio tasks.

Great choice
Makisklim 29.03.2026
Wanted a pair of do-all headphones. The sound is way better than expected, noise cancelling works wonders and even call quality was superb! Comfort gets 4 stars as ears tend to get hot but I used open back and in ear for many years so I might just be used to that. The dongle is a nice thing to have too! Very pleased, 100% recommend

S
Promising idea but flawed choices and implementation, including app
SamoKlikk 13.04.2026
This set of headphones was a promising idea, but the implementation is flawed, and unnecesarily so.

By default the headphone gives beeps and voice announcements of everything: that it is on, that is is turning ff, that this function is on, that it is off. And these announcements are LOUD and destructive, as they cut off the sound of what you are listening to. There is no button or button combo to turn that off. You have to go in the AKG app. And in the AKG app you can only turn off certain voice announcements. Some other remain. And the beeps cannot be turned off at all. Note that the volume of them is very loud, loud enough to give concern about hearing damage. This is just plainly poor, sloppy product design.

The basic sound of the headphone is decent but not great - it does require still tweaking of the eq to tame the highs, which can be shrill - and this can only be done with an app. Even though it has several eq presents, there is no button or button combination to cycle through presents. You must go in the app. This is poor design. A set of say 3 well designed presets would be enough, and a button combo to cycle though them.

The built in microphone (works on bluetooth or dongle only, not directly via USB or the analog minjack). This is another flaw. The mic should at least have a basic 3-pole connection. Also even on bluetooth the microphone does not just work without modification. It is always "enhanced", meaning it is, probably with som AI, always collecting information. In the app, you cannot turn off the "enhancements" to the audio of your conversation - not the microphone you speak into and not even the incoming audio, which is also "enhanced" and you cannot turn it off.

By default the headphones autoplay and autopause when you take the headset on or off. You cannot change this behaviour without going in the app.

Despite having a built in USB jack already on the phone, you still need the app to update the firmware.

The dependence on the app is privacy-invasive, as the app details on IOS shows that it collects "diagnostics" and "usage data". A device that has access to what I listen to, and my phone conversations, and has a mic - should NOT be collecting sending information of any type to any where. This is dystopian.

And anyway it is poorly designed. Too many things just lumped in with no thought or design intention, and the invasive app used as a crutch for everything.

Kopfhörer der Spitzenklasse zum Budgetpreis
d-trucks1 02.12.2025
