Raw look, warm sound

The cymbals in Zultan's Raw series are characterised by their raw, earthy look. The surfaces of the cymbals reveal the natural colour of the B20 bronze: The absence of a clean, polished finish is a very deliberate design decision here. All the Raw cymbals have a dark, dry response that melds perfectly with the rest of the kit – and the band – so they're perfect whenever musicians want warm, unobtrusive cymbal sounds. The cymbals are made in Turkey, the country in which the art of cymbal making is most highly developed and where cymbal smiths who have spent their lives perfecting their craft use traditional methods to create high-quality, beautifully musical instruments.

Zultan 13" Raw Hi-Hat

In tune with the music

Each cymbal in the Zultan Raw series is made from 80% copper and 20% tin – the premium B20 bronze alloy used for really high-end cymbals. Each piece is hand hammered, making every cymbal unique: Great care is taken during final tuning to ensure that the specified tonal tolerances are met. Not lathing the cymbals results, on the one hand, in their appealingly unusual look, on the other hand in a compact, slightly treble-reduced sound with a relatively short sustain. Thanks to these special acoustic characteristics, there is no risk that the cymbals of the Raw series will ever dominate the track they're played on. The medium-heavy 13" Hi-Hat offers a sensitive response and a defined sound that remains controllable even when played fully open. The typical chick sound produced when the hi-hat pedal is pressed is clean and cutting.

From Jazz to Electro and back again

Drummers from the genres of Pop, Fusion, Funk, and Jazz need dynamic cymbals with a fast response that are capable of blending homogeneously into different settings. The 13" Hi-Hat from the Raw series is perfect for the task: It can be played with sticks, rods, or brushes, and is thus also suitable for unplugged sessions. Fans of hybrid drumming, in which acoustic and electronic sounds are on an equal footing, often prefer cymbals with dry sound characteristics – one of the key features of the Raw series. As such, the 13" Raw Hi-Hat is sure to perform here as well.

Zultan 13" Raw Hi-Hat

About Zultan

To provide traditional craftsmanship at a fair price has been the guiding principle of Zultan ever since it was founded in 2000. The firm’s practice of selling directly to the end customer makes it possible to offer very customer-friendly prices. Nevertheless, the production process for Zultan’s trademark cymbals, which are made mainly in Turkey, is of the highest quality, a fact which has ensured they have also been a fixture in the Thomann range since 2011. The nearly 250 Zultan products cover several cymbal series, catering for all sectors of the music market. Zultan also offers accessories such as bags and drumsticks. Thanks to the use of high-quality materials and manufacturing expertise, Zultan really does offer uncompromising quality at a reasonable price.

Mics love it Raw

The 13" Zultan Raw Hi-Hat can be used flexibly and has virtually no musical limitations, although it's probably not best suited to the very loudest styles. But thanks to this moderate volume and its balanced frequency spectrum, the Raw Hi-Hat is actually a perfect studio cymbal, where it's best for a balanced mix if the drum mics pick up the cymbals as little as possible. Equally, even in locations with difficult acoustics, for example in halls with very high ceilings or in cold, boxy rehearsal rooms, the 13" Hi-Hat, like all of the other cymbals of the Raw series, delivers very reliable results.

Please put up audio demos
Anonymous 27.06.2016
Had to buy these based on youtube reviews etc, would have preferred Thomman put up audio samples for like for like on site comparison to other options. Was looking for the particular sound these hats are trying to crib (Turk), but without the price tag.

These aren't distinctively stamped 'made in turkey' in that particular way like the dark matter range which sort of suggests a certain factory which may have a hand in turning those out didn't turn these out.

Nice solid expressive bell. Nice stick articulation. Dry, but not super dry, less dry than expected or compared to the better known ones. Avoids excessive slosh if you like that in your open hats. Quality control seems ok. Medium weight and responsive. Don't think I'd have liked the 14"s as much.

I've got some 14" Zultan Rock Beats and to be honest these kind of feel and remind me of a lighter weight version of those given a different treatment. Nothing wrong with that, I wanted some 13"s with a particular sound in mind and didn't want to break the bank and could not have done better at this price point.

PD
Raw in every sense.
Porta Drummer 22.11.2024
This hi hat is raw in every sense, both sonically and aesthetically. What I really liked about it is the open and chick sound. Very nice for funky patterns. VERY NICE. Unfortunately I really disliked the closed sound, especially on the body. It was full of high ringing tones and also a substantial low humming tone. I've placed a wide bottom hihat felt inside the bell of the bottom cymbal and this took care of the low humming to an extent. I also had to make a triangle with gaff tape inside the bottom cymbal, to take away even more of the low hum. Passable. For the top cymbal I had to replace the bottom felt with a large one in order to control some of the ringing, but it was still there, although acceptable. What was strange is that the ringing frequencies and the amount of them changed drastically if I rotated the cymbal. At some spots the ringing was almost non-existent while on others it was beyond acceptable. Without this ringing this hihat would be quite good for the price. And now the aesthetic rawness: both cymbals came with lots of scratches both on the inside and on the outside, especially around the bell. I get it, it's raw. And I'd get used to it. What bothered me the most was that the hole in the bottom cymbal was way off center. You could spot it visually right away and of course the cymbal was severely tilted when mounted on a stand. Sure, they are relatively inexpensive, but drilling a hole exactly in the center is not rocket science, unless this is done by someone using a hand drill, and even then it's perfectly possible. At the end, I had to return this hihat, because it was simply too raw in all respects and based on this experience I'll stay away from Zultan. They're just not suitable for picky ears.

f
Not the best finishing
finkut 13.11.2018
Obviously one always has to consider the quality / price ratio of the product, but I trully believe this guy, althoug good enough could deliver a bit more based on what it costed and how easy it is to get other turkish cymbals for not much more.

Regarding finishing, the hammering is kind of unfinished and very inconsistent on some parts of the cymbal. Also the hole is not totaly filed.
About the sound it matches the style but there is kind of a rubberish/plastic overtone to it.

After this experience, I've actually tried brand cymbals for around the same price and managed to get more love out of them.
