Reviving the sound of the 1950s

Warm Audio WA-FT Fen-tone ribbon microphone

The Warm Audio WA-FT Fen-tone revives the spirit of the 1950s in a compact ribbon microphone. Its slender, pencil-style design is inspired by a historic model, and refined with modern components to deliver its legendary sound. There have been some subtle improvements, though, giving the mic rich, complex mid-range detail and a gentle roll-off above 15kHz, for a smooth presence that avoids harsh sibilance. Its omnidirectional polar pattern reduces lateral sound so audio is captured from the front and rear only, enhancing focus and depth. An integrated analogue preamp enables direct connection to an audio interface, and this bundle includes two matched microphones for expressive stereo recording.

State-of-the-art components for first-class sound

Unlike its predecessor, the Warm Audio WA-FT Fen-tone features a specially manufactured Japanese ribbon with a thickness of just 1.8µm, paired with a neodymium rare earth magnet and a premium CineMag transformer from the USA, resulting in a more refined and responsive sound character. It captures frequencies from 30Hz to 15kHz with ease, while a maximum sound pressure level of 148dB and a signal-to-noise ratio of 87dB allow both powerful transients and delicate details to be reproduced with clarity. When phantom power is engaged, the internal active preamplifier delivers an additional 26dB of gain and maintains a stable output impedance of 300 ohms, ensuring seamless integration into modern recording setups. The microphone housing is constructed from 99.1% aluminium, giving it a solid, durable feel that matches its professional performance.

Vintage sound in the modern age

The Warm Audio WA-FT Fen-tone is designed for music producers and engineers seeking a warm, vintage character that blends naturally into contemporary productions, offering depth, colour, and musicality. As a stereo set, it also also gives them creative options for capturing spacious and immersive soundscapes with clarity and balance. Its high maximum sound pressure level makes it equally suitable for loud sources such as guitar amplifiers, preserving impact and detail without distortion. Each microphone is carefully checked and tested by hand after production by an experienced team of engineers and musicians, ensuring consistent sound quality and reliable performance. For safe transport and storage, the set is supplied with a robust carrying case, along with two soft drawstring bags for the mics.

About Warm Audio

Warm Audio is a company founded in 2011 which has made it its mission to offer the highest quality studio equipment at the most affordable prices possible. The focus is on remakes of classic studio standards, whose circuits are reinterpreted, often freely and with flair. The American firm’s product range includes their own variants of the Urei 1176 and the Teletronix LA-2A compressor, a Pultec replica, and a number of different microphones and preamps inspired by the corresponding legendary devices from the analogue era.

Compact instrument microphone

This stereo pair of ribbon microphones is especially well suited for recording acoustic instruments such as pianos, horns, and string instruments in stereo, as well as dual electric guitar amplifiers – all with real depth and cohesion. The omnidirectional polar pattern makes it possible to record two instruments facing each other, such as acoustic guitars, while maintaining a natural and balanced image. A pair of Warm Audio WA-FT Fen-tone microphones can also be used as overheads for drum recordings, with the front capturing the direct sound and the rear picking up the natural ambience of the room. The microphone clips supplied allow easy mounting on almost any stand, making it simple to position and align the two mics precisely in relation to the sound source (or sources) being recorded.
