Impressed and a bit dissapointed...
Alex Djuran 16.10.2019
So... you decided to purchase a tube mic for your studio and this particular mic has caught your eye? READ THIS!

So upon doing some research, I found that this mic is actually an OEM of the very 1st version of the sE Electronics Z5600. I have never used any of those mics before, but I figured the sound can't be that far off. I was also told to replace the chinese 12AX7 that it came with to ensure lower noise and better sound quality.

Before we even get to the mic, I feel the need to mention everything it comes with and in. The briefcase it came in was just awesome. Sturdy and just plain cool, however I've had major issues to set the lock code, as the instructions were terribly unclear. The power supply and cables were fine, however I have to caution everyone with the shockmount!
It's reaaaaally poorly cut, i cut my fingers 2ce on the sharp edges as I was screwing it onto a mic stand! You are given some spare bands for the shockmount, which is a nice gesture, but I'd rather see the shockmount be well cut and not needing those.

On to the mic itself. It comes in a wooden case that weighs nothing, and would not protect the mic from anything. The mic itself felt like it was going to fall apart when I was pulling it out, as the metal casing is really really shitty. After replacing the tube, I plugged the mic into it's power supply, let it warm up for about 10 minutes, plugged that into into a Warm Audio WA273 into a 1176 clone and went to town.

Looking beyond the shady worksmanship, the sound of the mic was honestly super impressive. The rich bottom end, creamy mids and super crisp clear and sharp top end really let you hear the intimacies of any voice.
I put up the mic next to my Warm Audio WA87 and while the mics are very different, for many voices, I'll be reaching for the SCT2000 quite a bit!

But for real thomann, that shockmount needs work. I'll be needing industrial gloves when I handle that thing.

Best mic at this price range
JCS84 14.11.2017
I bought this for my wife, mostly for recording vocals. She's very happy with this mic: the sound is warm and crisp, with a very pleasing, lifelike, professional quality.
In order to choose this model, she listened to many demos and did a blind sound test with the top three candidates. She's very satisfied with her choice and can't believe it was so inexpensive.
The mic as well as the shock mount included in the set are built sturdily, moreso than expected. The case is also nice and sturdy, but somewhat large and heavy. Her only complaint is the bulkiness of the power supply, which once packed adds to the overall weight in the already oversized carrying case. This might not be an issue for larger/stronger people.
We can easily recommend this mic for a basic home studio setup.

JF
Great natural sound with that little extra tube warmth
Johan F. 23.01.2015
This is a great mic for capturing a natural sound and get that little bit of tube warmth. I've used it on guitar amps, vocals, guitar. My original idea was to swap the tube for some vintage NOS, but I didn't come that far as it sounds very good as it is. It is very similar in sound (and specs) to e.g. the Apex 460 which a lot of people celebrate... at the time I bought this I actually had one of these to compare with and I found them to be nearly identical. The different polar patterns is nice to have. Came with good shock mount and a nice case as well. Definitely a keeper.

My work-horse microphone
William762 17.07.2013
Bought this two years ago roughly - very happy with it. I do a lot of home recording and I've used this for vocals with lots of people and it seems pretty versatile (as in it suits most voices). So much so that I've used it pretty much exclusively on my last record for my own vocals.

I've also been happy with the results I've got from using this on acoustic guitar, harmonium, ukulele. Cradle is good and solid, though one of the elastics did break immediately it came with a few spares so no worries. Has an 8-pin xlr and a power supply, comes in a briefcase, so a little bulky but not crazily so. On the power unit you can flip between cardioid, omnidirectional and figure 8 - lots of flexibility.

There's definitely better mics out there, but if you're looking for a solid all-rounder for a home studio scenario before you get the cash together to buy something more high end I'd have no trouble recommending this.

Amazing value for money
Richard7725 04.04.2015
Really nice solid mic with valve warmth that gives a great sound on all sources. Very sensitive and has a lot of gain. Comes in sturdy carry case with transformer and hook up leads. All you need is standard XLR lead to mixer or interface and your done. Another quality item from Thomann.
