Turn any headphones into a studio

Producers and musicmakers who already own a registered version of Sonarworks SoundID Reference for Headphones now pay less to upgrade to a more comprehensive system – Virtual Monitoring PRO. The technology is based on a personalised room simulation, created from high‑resolution measurements taken with the binaural USB in‑ear microphones that are an integral part of the package. The software then captures not only the studio's acoustic characteristics but even the shape of the listener's ears, generating a virtual monitoring profile that precisely recreates the studio's unique, familiar three-dimensional sound – through a set of headphones. In addition, the software can also reproduce realistically modelled stereo environments, as well as simulations of consumer audio settings like cars and other devices. All this translates into a consistent reference for anyone who wants to work with a reliable sound setup, regardless of their location or the time of day.

Sonarworks Virtual Monitoring PRO Upgrade

For any over-ear headphones

The Sonarworks SoundID Reference Virtual Monitoring PRO package combines dedicated software with Sonarworks' binaural microphones, which capture the room's acoustic characteristics and the user's personal Head‑Related Transfer Function (HRTF) – in other words, the way sound reaches their ears in that specific space – in a single measurement session. Based on these measurements, a highly realistic virtual monitoring profile is generated. Measurements are taken at 44.1kHz, while playback supports sampling rates from 44.1 to 192kHz. The software is compatible with macOS and Windows, and can run as a standalone application or as a plugin in AAX, AU, and VST2 formats. Unlike SoundID Reference for Headphones, Virtual Monitoring PRO is compatible with any over-ear headphones, with no headphone-specific calibration required.

A professional mixing suite

Studio sound everywhere

Sonarworks SoundID Reference Virtual Monitoring PRO is aimed at mixing engineers, producers, musicians, and content creators who need reliable reference-grade audio even when working outside their usual studio environment. Anyone switching between a main studio, a home setup, a client's space, or even a familiar car stereo will benefit from the way the system reliably reproduces an identical sound profile, smoothing the transition between locations and facilitating accurate, reproducible decision-making. There are plenty of producers who mostly work at night, or while they're travelling – and plenty more who just need to be considerate of their neighbours and housemates: Virtual Monitoring PRO gives them all the ability to access their favourite studio's sound at any time.

About Sonarworks

Sonarworks has its headquarters in Riga, Latvia, and was founded in 2012. The company gained an international reputation with its renowned Reference 4 calibration software for headphones and monitor speakers, and more than 100,000 recording studios and renowned sound engineers around the world now place their trust in innovative technologies from Sonarworks. Reference 4 has since been superseded by the SoundID Reference software, which in addition to a range of other new features can also be used to calibrate multi-channel speaker systems (Dolby Atmos). Sonarworks is now also active in the consumer electronics sector. SoundID is a mobile and desktop application that utilises professional software technologies to deliver the desired sound at the touch of a button.

It all starts here

The practical workflow starts with room measurement: Users insert the binaural microphones, after which a series of test signals is played through the room, and the software calculates a virtual monitoring profile in around fifteen minutes. The room's impulse responses – including early reflections, boundary interactions, and late-field reverberation – are converted into a filter reproducing the behaviour of real speakers in that space. A headphone profile is then fine-tuned to the characteristics of the user: this involves correcting the headphone's own frequency and phase response, and applying a personalised HRTF that matches what the user would hear in a physical studio. This complex calibration and correction procedure means that even an average pair of studio headphones will deliver extremely accurate results, making the Virtual Monitoring PRO system a valuable tool even for up-and-coming producers who don't often have the chance to work in a professional studio.
