Fluent, warm and expressive

Sadowsky MetroExpress 21 Hybrid PJ 4 Fretless Left-handed Black, bass guitar

The Sadowsky MetroExpress 21 Hybrid PJ 4 Fretless Black Left-Handed is, exactly as the name suggests, a fretless version of the New York-based high-end bass manufacturer's Hybrid model in a left-handed variant. Hybrid here stands for the guitar's pair of passive pickups, with a P-style pickup at the neck and a noiseless J-style bridge pickup responding beautifully to everything the fretless morado fingerboard – a tonewood with a very fine-pored structure for a particularly smooth playing feel – produces, from soft, singing tones to articulate bass riffs. And with its resonant okoume body and roasted maple neck, as well as the renowned Sadowsky active 2-band preamp (which allows bassists to switch effortlessly between a modern, punchy sound and passive mode, for more of a vintage character) the Hybrid PJ 4 Fretless combines fluent expressivity with the precision, versatility and reliability that makes Sadowsky basses so popular.

Comfort and control for lefties

The Sadowsky MetroExpress 21 Hybrid PJ 4 combines professional playability with a host of practical features. With its 12" fingerboard radius, 34" scale length, and 19mm string spacing, players will always feel they can handle the bass naturally and intuitively, while still maintaining precise control over their slides and vibratos. The fretless morado fingerboard is extremely sensitive to dynamics and technique, with both fluent, singing runs and expressive glissando among its repertoire. And the dedicated controls for volume, balance, treble, and bass mean musicians can dial in their signature tone at will. The Just-A-Nut III nut keeps intonation precise, and the quick-release bridge makes string changes quick and easy; lightweight tuners, security locks, and a quick-access battery compartment make this bass ready for everyday use.

For precise purists

This fretless Sadowsky is made for left-handed players who really want to put their own mark on their tone, expression, and dynamics. Jazz, Fusion, and Soul bassists will love the smooth transitions and organic slides, while studio musicians playing on Rock and Pop tracks will appreciate its warm, present sound and the heavy, punchy low end the P-style pickup delivers. The Sadowsky MetroExpress 21 Hybrid PJ 4 Fretless is less a beginner's instrument, and is instead aimed at players with a good ear and a real feel for musicality – it'd be a good option for upright bass players in a Jazz ensemble looking to make the move to electric. Thanks to its active 2-band EQ, though, the Hybrid is guaranteed to be flexible enough to cut through in modern or electronic setups, too.

About Sadowsky

For over 40 years, professional musicians have associated the name Sadowsky with high-end bass guitars, electric guitars, and archtop Jazz guitars. In the late 1970s, Roger Sadowsky opened his own workshop, where he started out repairing and modifying instruments from other brands. In the '80s, he began to develop bass guitars that represented his own unique vision: Soon, the name Sadowsky had a worldwide reputation for quality, thanks in part to prominent clients like Marcus Miller and Will Lee. Roger's legendary inventions include the on-board preamp for bass guitars, which helped create such extraordinary demand for Sadowsky instruments that he eventually made the decision to start producing the Metro line of basses in Japan. In 2019, the German bass specialist Warwick assumed manufacturing responsibilities for the Metro series, ensuring the name Sadowsky will continue to be synonymous with high-quality instruments for years to come.

Expression, not aggression

In the studio, the Sadowsky MetroExpress 21 Hybrid PJ 4 Fretless Black Left-Handed really comes into its own: It delivers clear, woody fundamentals with an almost vocal presence, making it ideal for Jazz, Soul, Ambient, or atmospheric Pop and Rock projects. On stage, it shines with its vibrant, versatile dynamics and a present, punchy tone that slots effortlessly into any band setup. Its flexible EQ layout lets musicians fine-tune their sound to suit the room and the vibe, while the PJ pickup config delivers both depth and definition. But paired with quality DI preamps, tube stacks, or recording interfaces, it becomes a versatile tool for players chasing more than just the right sound – it's all about the purity of musical expression.
