The Ortofon 2M Black is a high-end turntable cartridge system delivering an exceptionally direct and dynamic sound profile – as the pinnacle of the 2M range, it's top of its class in virtually every respect. The nude diamond stylus, featuring an ultra-fine Shibata elliptical cut, transfers the most delicate nuances from the groove to the tonearm. Thanks to its moving magnet technology, the 2M offers near-comprehensive compatibility with a wide range of audio systems and phono preamplifiers. An original Ortofon tracking force gauge and a cleaning brush – as well as the necessary headshell screws plus matching screwdriver – are included in the package.
In a hi-fi signal chain that's genuinely high fidelity, every component must be of exceptional quality. The cartridge, however, is particularly critical, as this is where the first contact with the record occurs: Whatever the quality of the subsequent components, they cannot truly compensate for any sound that has not been captured accurately at this initial stage. The Ortofon 2M Black was created with exactly these high stakes in mind. The elliptical Shibata cut of the nude diamond teases out even the finest nuances from the groove, delivering punchy bass, full-bodied mids, and crystal-clear transparency across a remarkable frequency range of 20Hz to 31kHz.
The Ortofon 2M Black is a highly revealing cartridge aimed at experienced listeners with the very highest standards. It reproduces every nuance of the record with precision, transparency, and analytical accuracy – without embellishing or concealing anything. It's the perfect pickup for demanding high-end hi-fi enthusiasts; with its Shibata diamond, it is widely recognised to be one of the finest moving magnet cartridges available. When paired with a similarly high-grade reference rig, it'll enable listeners to assess and discuss the quality of their favourite recordings at the highest level and in the greatest detail. This vinyl virtuoso is, understandably, less well-suited to DJing and similar action-packed settings.
The Danish company Ortofon has been synonymous with high-quality phono technology for more than a century. Founded in 1918 by engineers Axel Petersen and Arnold Poulsen, Ortofon developed its first magnetic pickup system, the M-15, in 1969. The company’s futuristic-looking Concorde pickup series was launched in 1982, and its stylish, streamlined design established itself on the DJ scene as the new standard for use in clubs and discotheques. Ortofon also produces high-quality moving magnet and moving coil systems for every application and price point, from quality-conscious beginners through to uncompromising high-end hi-fi aficionados.
The Ortofon 2M Black pickup system is perfectly suited for listening to music and assessing a recording's sound quality, but it's also an outstanding choice in the studio for digitising vinyl records. With its exceptional tracking precision and the incredible transparency of its sound, this moving magnet system reveals the finest tonal nuances of every track, at a standard normally reserved for far more expensive moving coil designs.
The Shibata cut is an evolution of the conventional elliptical profile; it was developed by Norio Shibata to enable tracking of frequencies up to 50kHz during CD-4 quadraphonic playback. A Shibata diamond tip is very gentle on the groove, and thus ideally suited for playing standard stereo records as well. The pioneering Shibata technique gives the diamond a complex parabolic cut that extends the contact zone with the groove vertically, as well as an extremely narrow profile as it moves along the groove path, allowing the pickup to retrieve audio data from the walls of the groove with immense precision. The contact area of a Shibata stylus is roughly three times larger than that of a standard elliptical profile: This enables the Shibata to capture even the finest nuances engraved by the cutting stylus during the master disc production process.
