Very handy albeit noisy

I'll make it very simple. Are you tired of all the 12v adapters you have? Are you annoyed by all the wall warts in your power sockets? Then you plainly need this. However, you will have to deal with noise. Often it will be the whine of the USB and in a portable setup there is a good risk of ground loop noise.
