I know the Neumann TLM102 which the MXL990 is (sort of) a clone of. The 990 is really a decent mic. Good value for money. Used it on both vocals and drum overheads (yes, I know traditionally they are small diaphram mics but on decent cymbals a large diaphram sounds better). I would like a pad switch in this mic.
The 991 feels light weight but the sound is OK. I used it a couple of days back on a hi-hat. Had I been using a mic with a pad switch I would have put the pad in, but the MXL991 didn't overload even close to the hi-hat. I'll use that again.
The case is too light weight, I will need to find a better case.
