The complete Bluetooth package

The Mackie CR5 BT is in fact a pair of full-range speakers, for an active stereo setup right out of the box. One of the units carries a built‑in Class D amp with a 100W output, as well as Bluetooth 5.0 compatibility, while the second speaker is a passive box that takes its feed directly from the first. The CR5 BTs are part of Mackie's much‑loved CR series of studio monitors, now cruising into their third generation. CR actually stands for Creative Reference, a nod to the devices' blend of reference‑grade playback and creative tone‑tweaking options. In action, the CR5 BT set reproduces audio frequencies from a low of 51Hz right up to 20kHz, hitting a solid sound‑pressure level of 105dB SPL. Despite their sturdy build, the speakers weigh no more than about 3.5kg each, so there's scarcely a stand out there that can't handle them.

Keep them neat and tidy

The sturdy MDF cabinets of the Mackie CR5 BT speakers feature rear‑firing bass reflex ports, effectively extending the low‑end. Each speaker combines a 5" woven‑fibre woofer with a silk‑dome tweeter that sits safely behind a protective grille. When the speakers are used as nearfield monitors, they can be switched into Desktop mode, a preset which takes the user's listening position into account and delivers a more focused sound that helps keep reflecting soundwaves in check. Bookshelf mode, on the other hand, suits setups where the units are further away from the listener. A switch also allows the left and right channels to be swapped if needed, helping keep the power and audio runs under control: Of course, the passive second speaker hooks up with no fuss at all – just a standard speaker cable connected via spring-clip terminals.

Is there anything they can't do?

With a pair of Mackie CR5 BTs, users have a real audio Swiss army knife at their disposal, suitable for content creators, home studio setups, and owners of project studios who want an affordable full-range monitoring setup with easy wireless pairing. Thanks to the speakers' compact build – they're each just 17.5cm wide – the system takes up little space, fitting neatly almost anywhere. Because of that, the CR5 BTs are also a good choice for music fans eyeing a stereo setup for everyday living‑room listening. For hooking up consumer audio devices, both RCA sockets and a mini‑jack input are on board. That makes the set a solid option for gamers too, who can run it from a PC or laptop with an adapter. Recording enthusiasts and hi‑fi heads, on the other hand, will appreciate the active unit's balanced jack inputs, which add a nice touch of pro‑grade flexibility.

About Mackie

In 1988 Greg Mackie, already a successful co-founder of a pro audio company, founded Mackie Designs Inc. with the goal of producing affordable, high-quality mixers. The company's first official product, the LM-1602 line mixer, was initially produced within the four walls of his home. As sales figures were encouraging, its successor model CR-1604 soon followed - and in 1991 the company finally moved into its first proper production facility. The combination of reliable quality and low prices quickly brought the company enormous success, so that by 1995 Mackie had already sold 100,000 products. In 2003, the company was renamed LOUD Audio, LLC so that there is no longer any confusion between the Mackie brand and its former parent company of the same name.

From the podcast to the party

In home and project studios, the Mackie CR5 BTs can be set up as nearfield monitors, ideal for producers mixing their next track or content creators editing their podcasts and vlogs. Equally, the speakers will also pull their weight for day‑to‑day listening duties and parties. For quick A/B switches between speaker and headphone output, there's a front-facing 3.5mm socket: And with the volume and tone controls right on the front of the active unit too, it's always easy to dial in the right levels, meaning the speakers can sit pretty much anywhere in the room while staying effortlessly accessible. If deeper bass reproduction is required, the CR5 BTs pair perfectly with a subwoofer such as the Mackie CR8S BT, creating an effective 2.1 setup.

solid
Mackie McMacface 04.04.2025
These fellas are solid! They're quite heavy, but in a reassuring way.
Easy to set up and the Bluetooth speaks to all the relevant devices.
They kick a certain amount of ass, especially when dialed to 'play' - the bass is tight and punchy.
ONE DOWNSIDE - the speakers make a high frequency buzzing noise, so when the music is quiet or there's no sound playing, you can hear it.
