Wireless reference sound
The Lewitt LW6 is a wireless headphone that combines reference-grade sound with freedom of movement across the studio, from recording and monitoring to editing, mixing, and mastering. Its closed-back, over-ear design provides passive isolation: During recording, very little of the monitor signal will bleed into the mic, and during mixing and mastering, ambient noise stays out. The RealSound ultra-wideband transmitter sends audio as an uncompressed PCM signal, with a latency of just 5.8ms and a range of up to 5m. Inside the LW6 are 40mm drivers with bio-cellulose diaphragms, covering 20Hz to 20kHz and reaching up to 121dB SPL. The LW6 also features DSP functions such as virtual studio monitors, custom EQ, and a Loudness Guard that helps protect listeners' hearing. As a bonus, the headphones also include a licence for Lewitt's Space Replicator Essential plugin.
Closed-back build, open-back tuning
Ear shape and fit play a big part in how closed-back headphones sound, which is why Lewitt has tuned the LW6 using microphones placed in real listeners' ears rather than relying on a measurement head alone. The result is a sound that comes close to the transparency of open-back designs, while keeping the isolation of a closed-back build. To carry that sound over a wireless link as well, RealSound operates in the ultra-wideband range between 6.8 and 8.4GHz, away from the 2.4GHz band shared by Bluetooth and many Wi-Fi devices. With RealSound, the transmitter delivers uncompressed PCM audio at 1,728kbps with 110dB(A) of dynamic range, without the lossy coding that Bluetooth headphones depend on. The transmitter connects to a computer via USB-C, or it can run from the headphone output of an audio interface. For listening at up to 96kHz, the LW6 connects directly by cable over USB-C. There's also Bluetooth 5.3 (SBC, AAC) for everyday mobile use, along with a 3.5mm analogue input.
Freedom to move in the studio
Two groups in particular benefit from the Lewitt LW6's wireless mobility in the studio. Engineers and producers can re-position their mics in front of an amp, a drum kit, or a grand piano while hearing the effect of every adjustment in real time, without cables wrapping themselves around stands and legs. Musicians tracking themselves while playing instruments or singing, meanwhile, get a monitor signal with no noticeable delay thanks to a latency of just 5.8ms, and the closed-back design stops the sound from bleeding into the mic. On top of that, the transmitter's analogue output can pass the signal on to a second, wired pair of headphones, so that the performers and producers can listen in at the same time.
About Lewitt
Founded in Vienna in 2010, the midsize Austrian company Lewitt describes itself as the world's fastest-growing microphone brand, and indeed Lewitt has quickly made a name for itself among producers. The reason: The firm has a passionate team that produces remarkably transparent-sounding condenser microphones with low self-noise. Development takes place in Austria, but by producing the microphones in China, among other factors, Lewitt can offer its high-quality products at extremely low prices.
Pro tools on board
All of the system's DSP features run directly on the Lewitt LW6 itself, and they can be set up over Bluetooth using the software for Mac and Windows or the app for iOS and Android. Using the 5-band EQ, users can create up to three sound profiles, store them on the LW6 itself, and recall them at the push of a button. For mixing and mastering, there are monitoring modes such as mono, side-stereo, side-mono and left/right swap, along with K-metering for mastering and broadcast, as well as three user-defined target volumes. The two freely assignable buttons can, for example, toggle between different virtual studio monitors right on the headphones, and a volume wheel allows for fine level adjustments. For use on the move, there's Bluetooth, up to 21 hours of battery life and a fast-charge function that delivers around 3 hours of playback in 15 minutes. Replaceable memory-foam pads and a flexible headband reduce pressure points, so the LW6 stays comfortable through long sessions, even for people who wear glasses.
In the spotlight
Lewitt Space Replicator
Lewitt's Space Replicator is a plugin that provides virtual listening environments for monitoring on headphones. The idea is to recreate the acoustics of different rooms, so users aren't limited to the sound of their own headphones and can instead draw on the realistic stereo image of a wide range of listening environments. The Essential package included with the LW6 is in fact quite comprehensive, and covers two mixing and mastering studios, three rooms for mix checks, a live venue, and four headphone simulations. More than 800 compensation profiles mean the plugin can be used with other headphone models, too. As a result, it's easy to hear how a mix would translate to professional control rooms, clubs, cars, and other spaces. A personalised binaural profile that analyses the user's specific aural anatomy ensures the result as realistic as possible.
