A new era for the era series

For years, the focus of Hughes & Kettner's era series has been squarely on creating high-quality amplification solutions for acoustic instruments. Rather than pursuing functional minimalism, the era range is designed as an all-in-one, comprehensive concept: This certainly proved to be the right approach for the larger models, and it's also been implemented in a more compact format with the era C. With 60W output and an 8" dual-cone speaker, this combo offers enough headroom for home use, smaller rehearsals, and intimate live events. What stands out is less any single feature than the overall coherence: The era C, here in the very premium-looking Wood version, is designed as a central hub for acoustic setups with multiple signal sources. Instruments, vocals, and playback devices can all be amplified simultaneously without the need for additional equipment. This approach really comes into its own whenever time is short or space is limited.

Direct access to four channels

At its core, the Hughes & Kettner era C is a compact command centre for acoustic musicmaking. Two of the channels are configured as fully featured mic/instrument inputs, each with its own gain control, three-band EQ, and effect level control. This means musicians can process their acoustic guitar and vocals independently. Phantom power is also available for use with condenser microphones. Channel 3 handles playback sources, either via a conventional mini-jack connection or wirelessly over Bluetooth; the Bluetooth signal can be switched on and off directly from the amplifier at the touch of a button. Channel 4 serves a more specialised role as an FX return, allowing signals from external effects units to be routed back into the amp. The feature set is rounded out by an FX send and an adjustable notch filter, which helps tame problematic frequencies before unwanted feedback becomes an issue.

Effects and connections

When it comes to onboard effects, the Hughes & Kettner era C is refreshingly straightforward. The two main channels have access to five reverb types and three delay variations, all of which can be adjusted very intuitively. In fact, there's little learning curve involved at all, making it easy to arrive at usable results quickly. The effects do the essentials well, providing the ambience needed for both instruments and vocals. When it comes to connectivity, the era C is equally flexible. The XLR DI output can be switched between pre- and post-effects, and includes a ground-lift function should hum become an issue. There's also a headphone output for quiet practice, along with the option to run a parallel signal to a PA system or audio interface. As a result, the era C can serve both as a stage monitor and as the central signal source for a wider setup.

Acoustic, nice and easy

The Hughes & Kettner era C is ideal for setups where several signal sources need to be amplified at the same time without making the overall rig unnecessarily complicated: The wood finish of this model also means it genuinely enhances the look of any venue it's used in. Typical examples include singer-songwriters, small duos, or acoustic ensembles in which instruments and vocals are played side by side and the audio can still profit from a certain level of adjustment. All told, the era C's feature set offers plenty of scope for different applications without drifting into specialist territory. Effects, multiple channels, and a generous range of connectivity options are all present, yet the amplifier remains straightforward to operate. Players looking for a more specialised solution, as well as greater power reserves, may want to take a look at the models in the era 2 series.

Hughes & Kettner is one of the largest German suppliers of guitar and bass amplifiers. Founded in 1984 by Hans and Lothar Stamer under the name Stamer Musikanlagen GmbH, the manufacturer from St. Wendel in the Saarland can boast of its numerous innovations. For example, its first venture into the field of guitar amplifiers, the ASR64 from 1986, was the first programmable amplifier in the world. Thanks to its compact format, the Cream Machine of 1987 can be counted among the very first mini tube amplifiers. Equally influential were the Red Box analogue speaker simulation, the first six-channel amplifier (the Triamp), and the ZenTera, which used modelling technology in an integrated amplifier even before Line 6.

Get ready to perform!

As soon it's set up and ready to go, the Hughes & Kettner era C just fits in – or stands out. At a wedding or a small acoustic performance, a guitar and vocal microphone are often all that's required, and both can be adjusted independently here and enhanced with reverb and delay. As such, there's often little need for any further audio equipment at all. The same applies to café gigs and smaller events, especially when space is limited and setup time is at a premium. The stylishly understated appearance of its warm, organic wood finish also adds real flair to an otherwise simple rig. That being said, the era C concept is equally practical at home or in the rehearsal room: Backing tracks can be integrated via the aux input or Bluetooth channel, while guitar and vocals run directly through the amplifier. If required, the summed signal can also be sent via the DI output to a PA system, for example on slightly larger stages or when recording a performance. That gives the era C a surprising deal of flexibility, without it being necessary to rethink the entire setup each time.

Nach einem Auftritt in einer kleinen Kapelle und einem Open-Air-Gig vor etwa 100 Zuhörern kann ich sagen: Ich will nichts anderes mehr spielen!
Der era C klingt einfach fantastisch – so hochwertig und ausgewogen, wie man es von seinen großen Brüdern kennt. Was mich allerdings immer noch verblüfft: Woher nimmt dieses kompakte Gerät diesen satten Bass? Die Größe lässt jedenfalls etwas ganz anderes erwarten.
Gemeinsam mit einem Sänger kamen wir uns frequenzmäßig überhaupt nicht in die Quere. Die getrennte Klang- und Effektregelung der beiden ersten Kanäle ist dafür Gold wert. Selbst den Notch-Filter mussten wir kein einziges Mal bemühen, obwohl der era C auf „Augenhöhe“ stand – ein echter Pluspunkt.
Wer den Amp als kleine PA einsetzen möchte, sollte sich unbedingt einen 35-mm-Lautsprecherständer gönnen. Für den klassischen Bühnen- oder Proberaumeinsatz reicht der era Tilt Stand völlig aus und sorgt dafür, dass man sich selbst deutlich besser hört.
Besonders begeistert bin ich inzwischen vom Einsatz im Homestudio. Der era C dient bei mir regelmäßig als Preamp für Gitarrenaufnahmen. Irgendetwas macht er mit dem Signal, das meiner Gitarre einfach guttut. D.I.-Out ins Audio-Interface, aufnehmen – fertig. Die Aufnahmen klingen direkt lebendiger, voller und inspirierender.
Selten hat mich ein Verstärker so schnell und nachhaltig überzeugt. Kompakt, leistungsstark, hervorragend verarbeitet und klanglich weit über seiner Größe. Von mir gibt es eine uneingeschränkte Kaufempfehlung!
