Gretsch drums have a strong association with jazz legends like Tony Williams, Max Roach, and Elvin Jones. The affordable Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz Drumset, which has a classic bebop configuration, is also deeply rooted in the jazz tradition. The shells made of 100% seven-ply mahogany deliver a warm, resonant sound. From its round badges and classic lugs through to the natural wood and foil surfaces, the look is very clearly in the Gretsch tradition.

Small drums - big sound

An 18" x 14" bass drum combined with 12" x 8" and 14" x 14" toms and a 14" x 5.5" wooden snare drum is the setup which has been the standard in Jazz for many decades. Gretsch's typical 30° bearing edge gives the mahogany drums a soft, musical sound, while the free-floating tom mounting system and the 1.6 mm thick hoops ensure optimum sustain. With its sturdy bass drum legs and the flexibly adjustable tom holder, the kit - unlike its predecessors from the 50s and 60s - can easily cope with the rigours of everyday touring. The package also includes a bass drum riser, which allows the beater to hit the exact centre of the head, unlocking the drum's full potential.

About Gretsch Drums

The Gretsch company was founded in 1883 by Friedrich Gretsch, a German-born immigrant, in Brooklyn/USA and has been owned by Drum Workshop since 2015. In the first decades of its existence, the company specialised in the production of tambourines, drums, and banjos, but from around 1930 it started building guitars. By this time, Gretsch had established itself as a serious manufacturer of drum sets, and in the decades that followed, Gretsch drums were extremely popular, especially among Jazz drummers. The typical wooden drum shell has a relatively narrow contact surface for the head on the outside, which allows it to vibrate unhindered. On the inside, most manufacturers mill the shell at a 45° angle. However, the Gretsch company has been an exception in this regard and consistently relies on a 30° angle in order to achieve a softer, more controlled sound due to the slightly expanded head contact surface.

Hallo liebe Musiker/innen,

den Catalina Club Jazz sah ich das erste Mal in der Farbe "white chocolate" vor mehreren Jahren im Store. Leider gibt es diesen in Deutschland nicht mehr. Aber auch diese Farbvariante ist sehr hübsch.

Viel kann man dazu eigentlich nicht schreiben. Ich spiele von Jazz bis Metall auf dem Set und jede Richtung macht Spaß. Geeignet aber eher für Jazz, Fusion, Funk, Blues usw.

Dieser Set klingt einfach wunderschön und verschafft dem Raum eine große Vintage Atmosphäre. Meiner Meinung nach, einer der schönsten Sets, gerade mit der runden Platte mit der "Gretsch" Aufschrift auf der Kick-Bass.

Bin froh diesen Set zu besitzen und erweitere es demnächst mit einem weiteren Tom von der selben Reihe.

Anmerkungen zur Snare beim Catalina Jazz Club

In den meisten Bewertungen kommt die Snare drum bei dem Catalina Club Set nicht gut weg. Das hat auch seine Berechtigung, die Snare ist wirklich nicht besonders gut wenn keine weiteren Veränderungen vorgenommen werden. Aber selbst bessere Felle und ein hochwertigerer Snareteppich helfen eher wenig. Was wirklich hilft , sind dickere Spannreifen. Das beste Resultat erreiche ich mit den S-Hoops. Mit guten Fellen, neuem Snareteppich und den S-Hoops oben und unten klingt diese Snare plötzlich fantastisch ! Das Catalina ist ein tolles drumset, und die knapp 100€ Investition in die Snaredrum lohnen sich absolut. Übrigens klingen auch die Toms mit den S-Hoops nochmal viel besser , vor allem bei etwas tieferer Stimmung sind die dann wesentlich fokussierter.

Cercavo una batteria che fosse utilizzabile sia in piccoli club che sui palchi e devo dire che questa è stata davvero una scelta azzeccata!
Mi sono fatto influenzare molto dal colore per la sua ovvia presenza scenica ed una volta provata anche il suono è stato molto soddisfacente, ad eccezione del rullante. La cassa, il tom ed il floor tom hanno davvero un ottimo suono, sia con pelli sabbiate che clear. Il rullante invece, nonostante abbia provato pelli sabbiate e pelli clear idrauliche, non ha dato nessun cenno di miglioramento nel suono, anche cambiando la cordiera e la pelle risonante. Credo che la colpa sia dovuta al numero di tiranti, che purtroppo sono solo 8, e dallo spessore del fusto. Non ha davvero presenza ed impatto sonoro. Suona come uno scatolo di cartone.
La utilizzo principalmente per fare rockabilly, ma l'ho utilizzata anche in contesti jazz e ( con le oppurtune pelli) anche con il rock.

Ottima batteria per la sua fascia di prezzo, di pregio sono tutti i fusti e le rifiniture su di essi.

CONTRO
Il rullante ha davvero poca presenza sonora, almeno per quel che cerco io.

Dieses Set sieht wunderschön aus.
Es ist sehr einfach zu stimmen.
Ob hoch oder tief gestimmt, es erwartet dich ein großer Sound. It sings!! Ich liebe dieses kleine Gretsch.. bei dem Preis kann man nur staunen und sein Geld lieber für hochwertige Becken ausgeben, denn dieses Set steht den großen in nichts nach!
