There's a thin plastic disc inside the pad that I guess absorbs the impact of the pedal. I found that it dampens the thump a little too much but others who want more definition from their pedals will probably love it.
To be honest, if you remove the pad, you instead just have a (cool-looking) circular sticker, which I'm sure adds enough protection as is.
