In Ireland (and I suspect in much of NW Europe) reeds drying out is not really a problem - Relative Humidity here rarely falls much below 70% and is frequently over 80%. My experience is that keeping reeds in the closed case with with which these are paired leads to spots of black mould appearing - that can't be good!
