Excellent update of a classic. Singers, try this mic!
Beyerdynamic recently updated all their "M-series" mics. The M88 now gets a different grille, all other M-series have only cosmetic changes.
They have essentially gone back to the older M88 design with one coarse and one fine steel mesh and no foam. Pop filtering is less effective, but clarity for vocals is improved. There is more handling noise than more modern vocal mics but the HPF mostly fixes it. The front half of the grille is held on with 3 screws and on the old model these sometimes came out and the grille fell apart esp. on kick drum. Beyer have spares and you can use thread locking compound. It still has the heavy brass handle, coil and humbucking coil. Build quality is first class but the mic clip is all plastic, IMO needs a brass insert for the thread.
It has a better vocal sound than a 58 with less EQ and very good feedback rejection. Neodymium magnet produces high output. I've been using some pretty good vocal condenser, but when I tried the new M88 I couldn't believe how good it was! I would buy these for every singer if they were not so expensive. It is also well known how good the M88TG is for kick, snare, toms, guitar, bass cab, brass, woodwinds and more. For kick drum then definitely buy the WS59 wind screen to protect it.
Just a pity they've almost doubled in price in a year.

I have 2 and use these for recording upright piano, and for live and recorded vocal. These are very good clear mics. For recording the results are similar to a condenser mics, although for live the signal can be a little hot. For vocal recording, not quite as good as AKG414, but to be expected. For piano they're great for recording as they sound like a condenser but don't pick up as much background sound as a condenser.

Versatile & Musical
Such a drastic upgrade from other dynamics. I can always find a good use for this microphone, for live sound, or studio purposes, if I have one (or more) with me.
Good rejection / bleed control, and "clean" in that you really don't get any unpleasant or unmusical distortion... It is hard to overwork this microphone / capsule, it just works.

Classic for a reason!
Wonderful allround mike. Great for vocals, but also for bass and kick drum. When using as a kick-drum mike, do use a windshield or something to protect it from the impact of the kick-drum. Otherwise it will break!

Quality Mic
Beyerdynmaic make great stuff ans this mic is no exception,
Have only used on vocals but so far so great, Hyper-card pattern means virtually no ambiance which is great for bedroom studio,
Dynamic but sounds condenser like with its extended top end,

Great sound.. one issue
Love the sound of this mic. Only issue is touring with it we have a consistent issue where the lens screws that hold the Grill in place keep falling out! They are cheap to replace but can be a nuisance. I will add that we are using it on the kick drum so they may not /support' this use. It sounds great though!!
