Headphones made in Austria

Austrian Audio, a relative newcomer to the scene founded in 2017, released the Hi-X65 in May 2021. These circumaural, open-back headphones are fitted with rigid 44mm "high excursion" drivers (hence the name) and a system of ring magnets which, according to the manufacturer, improve sensitivity without raising distortion levels and achieve a full-spectrum sound. Furthermore, the open-back design limits internal reflections, adding to the "cleanliness" of the sound. Like all of the company's products, the Hi-X65 is both developed and manufactured in Austria.

Comfortable and reliable

The headband and ear cups of the Hi-X65 are padded with memory foam, which means that the headphones will always adapt to the user’s ears and provide a snug fit. Despite their compact size, the ear cups do not press down and thus always remain comfortable, especially during longer sessions. The sound is precise and detailed, all the way down to the lowest frequencies. The Hi-X65 achieves a sensitivity of 110dB SPL per volt, and as their nominal impedance is only 25 ohms, they will generate a healthy output level from any amp - so using a smartphone will also not pose any problems.

Full Metal Jacket

Though the Hi-X65 is primarily aimed at the studio technician, its compact, foldable, and robust construction, which includes metal brackets, will satisfy a variety of different users, including modern laptop producers. The headphones are designed for critical listening and mixing and, to quote the manufacturer, constitute "a critical new tool for professional mixing and mastering". Of course, music lovers will also appreciate the extremely precise and sensitive reproduction of the Austrian model. The headphones ship with both a long and a short cable, fitted with 3.5mm mini-jacks that lock to the base of the left ear. A 6.3mm adapter is also provided.

About Austrian Audio

The Viennese manufacturer Austrian Audio was founded in 2017 by 22 former senior AKG employees, including engineers and managers - as the traditional Austrian manufacturer was closing its offices and factories in Vienna. The first product releases from Austrian Audio immediately put them on the map, confirming their pedigree. The company's product range, which so far consists of headphones and microphones, is characterised by elegant design and smart concepts with a modern twist. In addition, all products are manufactured in Austria, as during the golden age of AKG. It will be interesting to see what Austrian Audio will come up with next.

Aimed at the professional market

The Hi-X65’s classic appearance certainly cuts a fine figure in the studio, be it in the mixing and mastering room or in the recording booth. Though not at the cheap end, the Hi-X65 achieves an excellent price-performance ratio which, coupled with its excellent acoustic properties and high degree of comfort, will certainly appeal to audio professionals. Should the latter group prefer a closed-back model, the Hi-X55 is also available. As always, we recommend that customers do a few listening tests before choosing their headphones.
