The most compact MPC ever

The MPC series from Akai Professional has long held a special place in producers' hearts, with the original MPC60 achieving near-legendary status among beatmakers and finger drummers in both Hip-hop and Techno. Over the years, countless tracks have been created across successive MPC generations, while the instantly recognisable layout with 16 velocity-sensitive pads has become one of the most influential designs in sample-based music production. Modern MPC models have evolved into highly capable production environments, offering many of the advanced features commonly associated with software DAWs, though this increased functionality often comes with added complexity. The compact Akai Professional MPC Sample takes a different approach, focusing on immediacy and ease of use while capturing the core appeal that made the MPC concept so popular in the first place. By stripping the process back to its essentials and combining portability with an accessible workflow, it offers a refreshing reminder that creating beats can still be straightforward, engaging, and fun.

AKAI Professional MPC Sample

Honey, They Shrunk the MPC!

The design and colour scheme of the Akai Professional MPC Sample clearly pay tribute to the iconic MPC60, reflecting the shared philosophy that has defined the MPC range from the very beginning: a strong focus on sample-based beatmaking. Its 16 velocity-sensitive pads provide immediate access to more than 100 factory kits spanning a wide variety of musical styles, allowing users to start creating straight away, while additional sounds can be sampled directly through the audio inputs, transferred from a smartphone via USB-C or imported from a computer. The eight available pad banks accommodate up to 128 samples, offering ample capacity for complete productions, supported by 32-voice stereo polyphony for flexible playback. At the heart of the workflow is the classic MPC step sequencer, complete with features such as swing, quantize and note repeat, enabling up to 128 patterns to be created, arranged in Song Mode and exported as finished audio files, all without the need for a computer.

AKAI Professional MPC Sample, detail

Back to the roots

While its design draws clear inspiration from classic MPC models, the Akai Professional MPC Sample is a thoroughly modern and self-contained production tool. The 2.4" colour display, the familiar data slider, and the three dedicated controls for real-time parameter adjustment all combine for a hands-on workflow that feels equally at home in the studio and on stage. Creative features such as Flexbeat and Pad FX add further sound-shaping possibilities, while resampling and sample recall make it easy to capture and revisit ideas throughout the production process. A built-in summing compressor helps deliver a punchy and polished sound directly from the device, reducing the need for additional processing. The range of connectivity options is equally extensive: MIDI and audio inputs and outputs, a sync output, a headphone jack, and a USB-C port for sampling, triggering connected mobile devices, and powering the unit. The rechargeable battery offers a runtime of up to five hours, and the built-in microphone and speaker round off the hardware.

AKAI Professional MPC Sample, detail on the rear

From the beach to the stage

Thanks to its portable design and built-in battery, the Akai Professional MPC Sample is equally at home away from the studio, making it easy to capture ideas wherever inspiration strikes. In a production environment, it serves as an effective sketchpad for developing grooves and experimenting with samples, while on stage it functions as a compact drum machine and sample player that can fit comfortably into even the most space-conscious setups. With 2GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, and the option to expand capacity via a microSD card, there is ample room for projects, sounds, and performances. Compatibility with larger MPC systems adds further flexibility, as projects created on the MPC Sample can be loaded and edited by supported MPC hardware and software from version 3.8 onwards. Combining portability, ease of use, and a streamlined workflow, this compact MPC provides an accessible entry point into the world of sample-based music production.

About Akai Professional

Akai Professional has its origins in the long-established Japanese company Akai, founded in 1929, which initially manufactured electric motors, soon to be followed by high-quality tape recorders and hi-fi products. Since 1988, Akai has also become a household name like no other on the Hip-Hop scene. With the development of its first MIDI Production Centre (MPC for short), created in collaboration with Roger Linn, Akai wrote history by decisively influencing the sound of Hip-Hop and Electronic music, which it continues to do to this very day. Famous exponents of the MPC series include DJ Shadow, Eminem, and Kanye West. Today, Akai is also well known for its robust and versatile USB MIDI controllers, not least of which is the bulletproof APC range of Ableton controllers.

A musical time machine

It is remarkable how much functionality has been packed into the compact Akai Professional MPC Sample. Samples can be shaped using filters and envelopes; they can looped, sliced, and rearranged via transient detection, beat-based chopping, or the manual Lazy-Chop function; time-stretching and pitch adjustment provide additional creative flexibility. Disk streaming also allows very long samples to be played directly from an SD card, and the Audio Recall feature makes it possible to recover and edit audio captured during the previous 25 seconds – almost like a musical time machine. Above all, the MPC Sample delivers a fast and intuitive workflow that recalls the appeal of classic groove samplers, while offering a range of modern tools that make beatmaking feel both creative and accessible.

Flow State Machine
808Ba$$boy 31.03.2026
When you are confronted by all the videos on YouTube etc you may be sceptical and rightly so. It has to be said that a lot of people online may not actually understand how the history of the mpc 60 and 3000 is connected to this little box of joy. There’s a lot discussion about what’s missing, which device you should choose, or just simply masses of misinformed influencers just talking to keep you engaged rather than to let you know how good the product actually is. Unfortunately, this is the current state of affairs with social media.
For those who have used any good vintage machines you realise how simplicity is really the ultimate key to creativity and satisfaction. Learning your tools inside out and creating a muscle memory that allows you to flex, at any moment, to create your own masterpieces. Testing the limits and boundaries of simple equipment has created entirely new genres in modern music. This was rarely predicted by music industry companies but it has been a proven method for several generations to escape the boundaries of the tools that they used. Aside from the sound and build of the vintage mpcs, this formula has been tried and tested. There are literally countless albums that have used the mpc as the main sequencing or sampling tool. Do the research and you’ll find the results.
So why the long intro about vintage machines you may ask? Simply because the DNA of this machine lies in that simplicity. The ability to pick it up, switch it on and simply start sampling to your hearts content is where the old and the new mpcs connect. Nobody needs large feature sets, DAW’s with too many tracks, features and workflows that you can’t remember without watching a video or reading a manual. Unfortunately this current music industry process has distracted thousands upon thousands of keen musicians from actually focusing on what they need to do, which is make good music and have fun in the process.
Speaking of fun, I can only say that the fun factor is exactly where this mpc takes the prize. It is far from perfect but I must say it has a feature set larger than any vintage pieces of equipment, yet it is powerful enough to create anything that my vintage pieces of equipment can create and more. The portability is a major plus and muscle memory for this type of device will probably developed within one week of regular use. Having been out for a short period of time I’m pretty sure that there’s feedback and future ideas being gathered to improve the device. There are some minor bugs but nothing too jarring. For those of you that are on the fence you might want to wait to see how this develops but to be honest it doesn’t get much better than this as a new release but there is room for improvement. We have seen worse and better. You can make or sketch your tracks, depending on the genre of course, with this device without a doubt. The ability to play along with computers and other pieces of equipment means that it can hold its own amongst more sophisticated and complex devices yet still provide you with a fully hands-on experience that does not leave you perplexed or confused. It just allows you to stay in the flow. Just long enough for a smile to start appearing on your face when you realise that within a few minutes you’ve already started to sketch out your idea.
For those of you who are new to the MPC world, there is a learning curve but I can safely say with this device, it is not particularly steep and the device actually has been quite well equipped with enough samples and ideas for you to get going for a good period of time. For those you are looking for your own kind of personalisation of the device, the SD card slot is your gateway. Within a few minutes, you can load up the device with your own personalised samples, if you’re not keen on direct sampling as your first steps. With that said the sound quality is on par with most other pieces of equipment. Of course it is not perfect and there are some aspects that have room for improvement. However these are just things that either can be rectified in future updates or has to be accepted for what they are.
In conclusion, I actually think this is the first MPC that feels like an actual continuation of the legacy MPC’s. Even though they may have been a fantastic onslaught of videos on social media, in my opinion the device does live up to its own hype. But don’t let other people convince you of what you can experience yourself. Pick up the device, turn off the computer, load some samples and dive into the world of mpc pad sequencing. See what your creativity can reward you with when you spend time being in the mpc zone.

j
great product
jacho981 09.05.2026
its great. its a toy. i own the Ableton Move and this one. since there is like a debate around, i will give my 2 cents.
- if you're sample focused. Go for the MPC.
- if you're into Sample based hip hop, go for MPC.
- If you're into electronic/experimental music, go for Move.

i really do not recommend the Move for sampling based styles AT ALL.
same way i would not recommend the MPC for electronic music.

you can still do both in the opposite, it just feels less suited for it.

great product, i love it.

A little universe

MPC Sample is an intuitive, joyful, handy and mobile little machine. It feels like a toy, but it’s much more: a compact sampler, drum machine and production brain in one. You can record, chop, edit and play samples from pads, sequence beats, layer sounds, apply effects and sync with MIDI gear.

I’ve been using it for a week and keep finding new ways to work with it: creating samples on the computer, then remixing and reshaping them on the machine. I dug into my brother’s records and can now tread the historical path of some of my favorite records from the 90s. Mistakes become lucky decisions, and being forced to work on a few-bar loop with limitations is an absolutely helpful way to rediscover loop-based music.

There’s still plenty left to discover, but with a little patience it opens up like a pocket book.

It’s basically the Game Boy I wish I had when I was little.
