Ed Sheeran with a difference!
Even at first glance, the PRS SE Ed Sheeran Cosmic Splash stands apart from a conventional baritone guitar, with its distinctive artwork, PRS "Media Buttons" fingerboard inlays, and nickel-plated hardware giving the hollow-body instrument a striking appearance. Limited to 1,000 units with this special finish, it is likely to appeal to both Ed Sheeran fans and collectors looking for something out of the ordinary. Beneath the eye-catching exterior, the 27.7" scale length, two PRS humbuckers, and L.R. Baggs piezo system combine the characteristics of a baritone electric guitar with the tonal qualities of an steel-string acoustic, resulting in an instrument that has a broad range of sounds on tap and offers plenty of flexibility while retaining its distinctive visual character.
Split personalities
The PRS SE Ed Sheeran Cosmic Splash combines two separate sound sources, with its two 85/15 "S" humbuckers providing a powerful baritone character and the PRS/L.R. Baggs piezo system, integrated into the six individual saddles of the stoptail bridge, adding the acoustic component. A three-way switch selects the neck, bridge, or both humbuckers, while separate volume controls for the humbuckers and piezo system let the player adjust both sounds independently and blend them as desired. Alongside the shared tone control, this provides considerable scope for shaping the overall sound, while two jack sockets on the instrument's bottom edge allow the signals to be routed separately. This makes it possible to send the humbucker and piezo sounds independently to an electric guitar amplifier, acoustic amplifier, or mixer/PA system.
Not just for Ed Sheeran fans
The Ed Sheeran Cosmic Splash is likely to interest more than dedicated Ed Sheeran fans, as beneath its distinctive Cosmic Splash artwork lies a full-sized baritone guitar complete with two humbuckers and a piezo pickup - a combination particularly suited to players who enjoy exploring the contrast between electric and acoustic sounds, while songwriters and loop artists can benefit from having two distinct sound sources within a single instrument for arranging and layering. It may also appeal to guitarists with an interest in unusual instruments, especially given its limited production run of just 1,000 units. With its eye-catching appearance and versatile electronics, the Cosmic Splash brings together a striking visual design with a broad range of musical possibilities.
About PRS
Paul Reed Smith Guitars is an American manufacturer of top-of-the-range electric guitars. Based in Stevensville, Maryland, the company was founded in 1985 by Paul Reed Smith, who had already been making guitars on his own since the mid-1970s as part of his music degree. PRS Guitars owes its breakthrough to guitar legend Carlos Santana, who liked the guitars so much that he soon ordered custom-made instruments from the firm. Since then, the product range has grown to include basses, acoustic guitars, and amplifiers. The list of PRS artists is abundant with big names: John Mayer, Mark Tremonti, Alex Lifeson, and Mark Holcomb are just a handful of the signature artists who testify to the quality of PRS instruments.
Baritone for studio and stage
The Paul Reed Smith SE Ed Sheeran Cosmic Splash is equally at home in the studio or on stage, particularly when standard guitar tuning sits too high for certain parts. Tuned to B, its 27.7" scale length produces a noticeably deeper fundamental tone for riffs, chordal backings, and doubled guitar parts, without requiring a separate instrument. The humbuckers can be routed through a conventional guitar amplifier, modeller, or multi-effects unit, while the piezo system can simultaneously feed an acoustic amplifier, DI box, or dedicated mixer channel. This opens up interesting possibilities for layering, combining the punch and power of the humbuckers with the added attack and acoustic character of the piezo, while effects such as loop stations, delays, and reverbs provide further scope for creative arrangements.
