4. Assembly - The Bundle

Here we dive into the "bundle-like" structure and functions of the bassoon.

The bassoon consists of four parts that fit together:

  • Boot (with handrest)
  • Wing
  • Bass joint
  • Bell

With the fifth part, the S-bend, the bassoon is complete.

The size of today's "bundled" bassoon is about 1,40 meters, and the overall tube length is approximately 2,80 meters.

Assembly Instructions:

In the following, "right" and "left" always refer to the backside of the bassoon, facing the bassoonist.

Start with the boot. The boot has two adjacent holes, a narrower one (right) and a wider one (left), connected with a metal "U-shaped curve." Insert the wing into the narrower (right) hole and the bass joint into the wider (left) hole.

The wing and bass joint are held together with a locking mechanism. Attach the bell onto the bass joint. Finally, connect the S-bend to the wing. The bassoon is fully assembled.

Now, all that's left is the double reed, also known as the "reed," which is fitted onto the S-bend to produce a sound on the bassoon.
