The Genelec 8341 AW is an active three-way studio monitor with a coaxial speaker design that delivers first-class sound. With its signature futuristic housing produced from lightweight die-cast aluminium, this model features three separate amplifiers with a total output of 550W, driving the two oval woofers, the 90mm midrange driver, and the 19mm tweeter to deliver sound pressure levels (SPL) of up to 110dB. In addition to its automatic start function, this speaker features integrated SAM technology, which allows multiple Genelec monitors to be optimised using software, a computer interface, and a measurement microphone. A balanced XLR input allows signals to be fed in without interference, while a protective circuit prevents driver damage by intercepting short-term level peaks. However, this model does not include magnetic shielding.
With a frequency range from 45 Hz to 20 kHz, the Genelec 8341 AW delivers impressive low-end performance for a compact monitor. To achieve this, the speaker uses bass reflex technology, which maximises low-frequency sound pressure and extends the driver transmission range. The (deactivatable) automatic start function detects whether a signal is present and automatically switches the amplifier unit on as required. This makes the speaker easy to operate and helps save energy. An analogue XLR input, two digital XLR sockets for the AES/EBU format, and two RJF5 network ports are provided. The latter allow the monitor to be integrated into a GLM network, enabling dynamic frequency adjustments via software. Frequency adjustments can also be carried out manually rather than by software.
Anyone looking for a monitor speaker with a flat frequency response, an adjustable monitoring sound for multiple listening environments, and a spacious, three-dimensional sound will not be disappointed by the Genelec 8341 AW. The speaker is an excellent choice for recording and mixing professionals who rely on consistently high-quality sound and may need to adjust its sensitivity, which can be performed using a small rotary control. The housing materials and shape also contribute to the speaker's high-quality sound, minimising resonances and ensuring optimum sound dispersion in multi-speaker setups.
Genelec was founded in 1976 by Ilpo Martikainen. It grew from a family business into one of the world's leading manufacturers of professional studio and broadcasting loudspeakers. To this day, Genelec's loudspeakers are manufactured exclusively in Finland. Genelec offers performance-oriented, neutral-sounding loudspeakers and subwoofer systems for audio professionals and sound enthusiasts, and a combination of innovative technology and design ensure that the range of products is continuously improving. The company is committed to sustainable development and environmental awareness. In 2018, Genelec was awarded the Pro Sound "Company of the Year" award. Genelec speakers are favourites of such recording industry veterans as Obie O'Brien, Michael Carnes, and David Reitzas, as well as of producers like Hardwell, Keith Ross, and Vini Vici.
Whether in a professional studio or high-quality project studio, the Genelec 8341 AW delivers outstanding results thanks to its flat frequency response and both manual and automatic room-adaptation features. It can be used not only as part of a stereo set, but also as a component in a surround setup. Genelec also offers a suitable subwoofer for this purpose – the Genelec 7360APM (article no. 397647). When used on resonant surfaces such as a desk or stand, the integrated IsoPod comes into play, decoupling the speaker from its support surface using a combination of rubber feet and connecting bars. Threaded inserts at the rear of the housing provide secure mounting. Genelec also supplies suitable mounting accessories, such as the Genelec 8000-325B Table Stand (article no. 503605).
SAM system and GLM network
The SAM system ("Smart Active Monitor") is a technology developed by the Finnish manufacturer Genelec. It enables speakers to be adapted almost fully automatically to the acoustic characteristics of a room. This is achieved using the GLM speaker software, a Genelec measurement microphone, and the corresponding computer interface, all of which are available together as a set (article no. 357055). An integrated DSP solution within the SAM monitors ensures that acoustic issues are compensated for, and the system automatically applies the appropriate frequency adjustment, while also allowing the listening position and speaker alignment to be optimised. Up to 30 monitors and subwoofers can be connected, adapted to the room, and matched to each other, and multiple settings can also be created and recalled for different listening positions.
