The Best P Bass Pickups
Cormac 22.06.2014
Like the box says, get these if you want that original Fender Precision Bass sound.
Made well, prewired to a new copper ground plate - solder in 2 wires and you're in business.

At one time I had active pickups in this 30 year old Made In Japan P bass. Run by a 9 volt battery (I routed a battery cavity under the pickguard), they were bright and "attacky", and I really liked them at the time.

Then, after some years of using those pickups, I reinstalled the originals out of a desire for change, and was amazed by the great tone. I didn't recall loving the original tone before, but this was great. That was at least 10 years ago.

Then I bought these recently to replace the original pickups. Because the original pickups sound great to me in this bass, I did this primarily 'cause I've upgraded everything on this instrument over the years - better bridge, better tuners, and I now did the electronics, thinking I could improve the instrument's tone even more.

While I can't say, "wow - it sounded awful before and now it's amazing!", I think maybe it's got better definition and clarity than before. It certainly has the traditional sound I'm looking for and I'm not wishing I hadn't bothered. I need to play and record with it more to form a clearer opinion, but so far it's everything I was hoping for, tone-wise.

I did note that the new pickups look like they're maybe manufactured better than the old stock ones.

All in all, these are the real deal, provide original spec sound, and they're made well and easy to install. It's hard to know whether you'll improve your sound in a way you'll like in any given instrument when you change pickups. But if you like upgrading your gear and experimenting, it's always worthwhile to try.

T
Excellent pickups at a very good price

I replaced the pickups in my 1984 Fender MIJ Squire Precision with these 'Fender Vintage P-Bass' pickups. You get the pickups, the foam, the metal plate and cloth covered vintage-style wire. I had the pickups professionally fitted as I'm not that good with a soldering iron, but you may be able to install them yourself if you're handy like that. The sound quality is great, its not night and day compared to the pickups I had previously but I'm very happy with the authentic 'precision' sound, and also the build quality of these. I'm using them with Thomastik Flat strings and the bass sounds great. I've read some opinions that certain boutique makes (e.g. Lindy Frailin) are superior, but they are considerably more expensive so I decided to go with these which I think are very good value. I believe these are the pickups fitted to the reissue USA Fender P Basses so that's good enough for me.

M
That classic sound
Mike.s 26.11.2020
Popped these into my MIM Precision, which already sounded half decent but snobbery about ceramic magnets got the better of me and after quite an outlay on the bass already these seemed like a sensibly priced upgrade to settle the argument.

Fitting was a little more complex for me due to being a lefty and needing to work out how to invert the base plate. For the benefit of anyone wondering how hard they are to get into a left handed bass, don't worry, with a little thought it works out easily enough.

Twenty minutes later I had the bass ready to plug in and even i could notice the tonal improvement they made. Most notably in the character of the mids and upper mids, which were significantly more pleasant than before the swap. They are a touch less aggressive than the ceramics, but the sound is better quality and spot on the classic Precision bass tone.

There is a bewildering choice of replacement pickups out there and it is hard to know which to chose, but you can't go far wrong with these.

Amazing with a 79 P
Anonymous 23.06.2016
Added these to my beloved boat anchor, an original 79 Fender Precision, and paired with some new CTS pots and switchcraft output jack. Superb upper-mid growl and beefy low-mids, which is where all the magic happens. Terrific for anything between dub and metal!

Absolutely brilliant!
Adam5 03.08.2014
Earlier this year I bought a second hand Fender Precision bass and the pick up that was in it had an incredibly low output. So I decided to replace it with this gem and it now sounds absolutely incredible. It's made my standard fender bass sound like an American fender bass. It's a really great, good quality passive pick up, gives you some fantastic vintage tones and is fairly easy to install.

Highly recommend this!!

S
Classic P-Bass tone? Look no further!
Steven474 05.04.2017
I bought this pickup a few years ago for a Westfield Precision Bass copy, which was utterly transformed. This pickup nails that original, 60's fat, honky bass sound heard on countless recordings, with tones ranging from deep woolly rumbles up to bell-like treble tones, and everything in between.
The pickup is well made, and also well presented, and I was thoroughly impressed by the inclusion of a copper backing plate as per the original design.

Sound-wise this is one of the two ultimate P pickups as far as I'm concerned, the other being the DiMarzio Model P. Naturally this isn't as hot as the DiMarzio, but the slightly lower output allows for far more subtlety to be injected into one's playing on tracks that aren't as aggressive. It's also perfect for that 'farting into a box' sound people always describe when talking about 60's P sounds.

Installation was a piece of cake, basic soldering was all it took to get this installed.

So is this the right pickup for you? Depends exactly what sound you're after, and also what exact bass you're building or upgrading. If your style is rooted in punk and more aggressive rock than the DiMarzio might be a better choice, but for anything else this is the tried and tested best you can get without spending really silly money.

Fender Precision bass tone the way Fender intended.

More vintage for the buck is impossible ;-)
Muncky 13.02.2014
I own this Pickup now for more than a year and I love it!

Back in 2011 I bought a Fender classic 50s Precision which is my main bass now due to it's playability and sound.
I played it with stock Pickup for about 4 months. It sounded very good, but for me it was a little bit to modern. slight kind of boomy bass and scooped mids. Not bad, but nit THAT tone I was hunting for. So I read many threads on many boards, many reviews and watches several videos to see, what kind of Pickup could match my taste.

I ordered the Fender Vintage PU as it had a good rating and was the cheapest one too.

Changing the P-bass PU is no rocket science and the manual shows up all necessary steps.

The pickup is very true to the original PU also with the brass plate underneath the PU and the cloth insulation on the wiring.

It took about 15 Minutes to change the PU.

So after changing I was very curious about how it would sound.
What can I say: It sounds awesome. THIS is the tone you would want to hear from a P-bass. I did an A/B comparison with an American Vintage 57 Precision bass and I have to admit it's really hard to tell any difference when it comes to the tone.

Clear statement? Buy it. It's a no brainer!

Punchy, warm. Great upgrade.
Anonymous 20.11.2015
Upgraded from the stock pickups in my '83 Japanese Squier P Bass. Added that warmth and thump that was severely lacking in the stock pup. The pickup also added some much needed clarity to the first 5 frets of the low E string. Great price too! Highly recommended.

So much better than the standard pups!
Stephen7788 09.12.2013
I bought these to replace the pickups in a MIM P bass. After installation the sound and tone had far greater clarity and it now sounds like a far more expensive bass!
