I prefer brass, having had stainless steel, because you can bevel and polish them to reduce scratchiness on the wound strings. this also makes them easier to travel through the string and produces a warmer sound. classical guitarists do this with their nails, so for me it was a no brainer. they sound horrible new on unwound strings and I didn't want to adopt a silly hand position to accommodate this.
