Great results, almost idiot-proof but don't drop it!

Bought this for field recordings (rain, storms, seashores etc) and also band rehearsals. Chose the H4 over the cheaper H1 as from the Youtube tests it sounded like the larger mics had the edge in terms recording quality. Also, the two extra mic inputs should be really useful when it comes to band rehearsals and, I'm hoping, to record a drum kit using the on-board mics as overheads and separate mics for the kick and snare.

Tested at a rocky beach on a calm day. The mics are astonishingly sensitive - picked up conversations of passing walkers from 20 meters away as though they were next to me. Not that I was snooping ;) but its almost like aural binoculars.

With the mics set at 90 degrees (can be twisted to 120 degrees for wider field) it gave great stereo imaging and a sense of space, albeit with an occasionally strange telescoping effect of far away things sounding near.

Really impressive sound results in terms of just how much detail, clarity, dynamic range and frequency range there is. Low bass, crisp lower-mids, smooth upper-mids and highs. For want of a better term, what you hear with your ears when recording is more or less what you get on this Zoom. That said, I think it'll take a lot of practice to get the field recordings I'm looking for.

Upon advice of a seasoned Zoom-user friend of mine, I used a pair of earbuds to monitor any wind noise as this can ruin a recording, but I found that on a fairly still day there was extremely low noise and, with the record level set at 80% there was no clipping - although it wasn't a loud environment. I made sure to test this as far away from any roads as possible, not easy as I live in a city where traffic noise is everywhere.

As I haven't yet bought a dedicated wind sock I used instead a pair of spongy pop filters that came with a pair of Behringer overhead mics (useless on their own when tested against a fan), and a child's mitten tucked over the mics. When used together that gave, I'd say, around 75% protection against wind noise without a noticeable drop in response. Not a scientific test, obviously, but good enough for me.

There are a ton of other features on this that I doubt I'll ever use, such as four-track recording and (apparently, but I can't find it) a guitar amp-sim.

Two downsides so far: I haven't yet worked out how to connect this to my 2011 iMac via USB. Bit frustrating as theres no readily available information as to why - maybe the iMac is too old? Plus the Zoom formats the SD card with it's own proprietary format, so not a case of simply pulling the SD car out and sticking it into the iMac. Will try it with a PC instead.

Also, the case itself feels slippery - hence one star less for 'Handling'. Some product descriptions mentioned a 'rubberised' case but it isn't at all. When mounted on a stand this won't be an issue, but generally you have to hold the Zoom rather gingerly when recording to avoid handling noise, so the risk of dropping the thing and smashing those protruding, fragile-looking mics was a constant worry. Maybe I should make some kind of shock-mounted gimbal?

One last thing - it comes with batteries (that don't look like they'll last long) but no SD card. An SD card is vital to operation, so bare this in mind when ordering.

Apart from those little niggles I'm very happy with it. Stay tuned for hours of ambient Hippy music on my Bandcamp page.

Perfect first recorder
Minsk 11.09.2020
I'm a hobbyist musician/producer using this great device for field recordings (ambience, nature, industrial sounds) and quickly record some musical ideas with my acoustic guitar or just have fun and record own foley samples, hit some things in the kitchen with drum sticks to create a "kitchen drum kit" :)

The preamps are surprisingly clear and quiet, I tried them with external condenser microphones - Rode NT2000 large diaphragm and T.Bone EM 9900 shotgun - both worked great for their own purposes.

Overall it's an awesome recorder packed with tons of features. The only minor issue is its strange finish which looks like a painting process gone bad.

Great quality, compact and robust.
Hooter 17.10.2020
I’m employed as a full time brass teacher in the UK. I wanted to create good quality recordings for my pupils as in these Covid-19 times we are currently unable to blow in the same room as the pupils. The recordings produced are of excellent quality and the ability to add a touch of reverb to warm the sound enables me to produce good quality materials for the pupils regardless of the room I’m recording in.
The unit comes with a good case to protect it when shoved in my bag with all the other things I need for my teaching day.
I would recommend this to anyone looking to make decent recordings on a small, robust and portable device.

Look no further!
PopDorset 16.05.2022
Wonderfully intuitive, lightweight, capable and with a reproduction quality that will put a smile on your face. I record with onboard mics for interviews, or a condenser parabolic mic for nature and occasionally from a line feed from the Village Hall sound system for meetings. Often I monitor with bluetooth earpieces to avoid wires. Very ergonomic and effortless to use. Other makes find it difficult to compete at this price point.

Great for both simple live recording or sophisticated 4-track dubbing
Musicanter 27.01.2024
Easy to use and great sound quality. I use it as a coaching aid during my woodwind practice to get immediate audible feedback on my playing which is really helpful. In multi-track mode you can record and play over a backing track, using some great built-in input effects (reverb, compression, etc.) or record with other musicians or band members. Would recommend buying the mains power supply and a thread adapter so you can mount it on your mic stand. Needs a 32Gb SD card. Inbuilt speaker is a bit limited so best to play back through a portable speaker (UE Boom etc.) or a decent sound system. Great product, no regrets in buying it.

Huge upgrade
Aarnivalkea 16.06.2020
My previous one was Tascam DR-07 and it felt like a toy when handled. This one impressed me with the quality. It felt sturdy on the hand and as far as i have played with it, i haven't have much negativity to say. One reviewed complained the long booting time and i agree. That might be a bummer on some cases.

The best recorder I've used so far. Few cons tho.
Nomiracle 19.04.2023
I love this recorder it's the most amazing thing I've used so far but unfortunately the only glitch I have with it is the fact that it's hard to put into context to which folders and files you are using on screen.

Very useful, very good quality recordings
howardjworf@aol.com 08.02.2023
Initial thoughts. I did look at the Tascam alternative but decided against it as users report that the mic pre-amps are noisy. I bought this to replace my H1 – the on/off switch came off, so it is basically junk. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered that the on/off switch on this unit is the same. I shall keep my fingers crossed that this one doesn’t fail, because this is a very good recorder, definitely worth the extra expense. It is solid and weighty, but not too heavy to mount on a gorillapod or similar. The carry case is really useful. All plastic, so wear on the catch and hinges may be an issue in time. That said, I am very happy with this machine.
So far I have used it to record our band rehearsals (which will be it's main use) with the microphones set at 120 degrees and the quality is a very clear and welcome step up from the H1. I am looking forward to plugging the output from the desk into the XLR inputs, something I haven’t yet had the opportunity to try. Later - the bass in the rehearsal recordings was a little low, probably due to where I place the recorder, so I have now DI'd the bass in to one of the XLR inputs, and it has worked very well. It seems that using DI means setting the recording level very low - it goes down below '1' which means it is possible to get an undistorted recording.
I shall update this opinion in a month or so, when I have had more experience of the recorder and can report on the more interesting features I have not yet used. One month later - still very happy with this recorder, so I doubt I shall be adding more to this review.
Based upon my limited use so far this has my 100% recommendation. Also based upon my usage - it does rather consume batteries - I recommend getting a mains power supply - I bought a Thomann one.

Gets the job done!
Asterion_MT 05.12.2021
The Zoom H4n Pro is one of those pieces of equipment that is there when you need it the most. Never lets you down in crucial moments and is quite easy to use.

The only part lacking is the lackluster software and clunky load times but other than that, it's great. I bought it for short film projects and was very satisified with the quality when I recorded dialogue, foley or ambience sound effects.
