My new go-to!

Steve G, 12.07.2018
I use this mic mostly in the studio but also in live sound. In the studio you get the software to turn it into lots of mics, and without the software it works as a very flat and clean mic.

Looks great, feels very sturdy, works excellently. Cannot think of a single con! The price for an item like this is incredible.

Great basic sound - good emulations

Norbert B., 10.07.2018
I used the microphone in my studio until now. Among other things, comparison test with the following microphones:
- Gefell M930
- Neumann TLM 49
- Rode NT-5 (with Michael Jolly-Mod)
- Oktava MK-012 (modded)
And the following microphones emulated by the Slate Digital ML-2:
- Shure SM-7 (I have the new B variant though)
- Shure SM57 (New)
- Sennheiser MD421 (Vintage)

1. Appearance and Commissioning: A small condenser microphone, slightly smaller than a Rode NT-5. Makes a stable impression, except for the switch from normal to dynamic, which is made of plastic). Installation is not a problem, only that I have the software installed 2x. Only the complete Virtual Mix Rack and then only what is actually included - Reviver and Trimmer) Otherwise you have a whole rack full of plug-ins that you can not use.

2. Microphone sound without emulations: I think it sounds warm, with a lot of bass and relatively little treble compared to my other small-format speakers. The sound is full and transparent. I like that very much, because many of my mikes are too high-pitched. The microphone alone is worth its price if it had no emulations.

3. Emulations:
It's great to be able to get a lot of different sounds from one and the same mic, but in my opinion it does not bring the 100% original sound.
I think the frequency responses are pretty good, but the original microphones from my collection sound more succinct - their own.
The Kleinmembraner basic sound of Slate always comes through a bit. Even the emulated Royer ribbon does not have that naturalness that distinguishes a true ribbon mic from a condenser microphone.
While I do not have the emulated Neumann microphones, I miss those typical midrange slate emulations that characterize my own TLM 49, for example.
Cool is that you can regulate a proximity effect (or the opposite of it). The sound gets fuller or thinner.
But, for all the criticism: it's great that you have the option to set different sounds - whether 100% real or not. The listener does not care, the main thing is that it sounds - and all in all it sounds very good!

4. Mix rack effect additions:
- Reviver: Should probably be a kind of tube enhancer or transformer simulation in one. That sounds great and you can use it to thicken the mic or give more heights. Really great.
- Trimmer helps, if I want to control the mic louder or quieter (sometimes distortions are emulated) or adjust the output.

Conclusion: Mr. Steven Slate always tells how 100% real everything is. He exaggerates something. But if you did not believe everything Steven promised, it's a very good buy. At least I am very satisfied and will probably buy another.
