Magnificent!
Peter R. 438, 03.09.2016
I went "digital amplification" a few months ago, I was happy with my digital sound at the small to medium music venues.
Bigger venues found my guitar was not making enough gain to stay clear, its channel having to be "pushed hard" it was sounding harsh, I needed a preamp to raise the guitars gain.
I paid ?100 for a battery powered preamp with TMB (treble mid Bass) & volume control, it is OK, but has batteries,
I hate batteries, always "the weak part" of any sound system.
I then recommissioned an old battery DI box which, helped my guitar gain even more than the pre amp did, but w'out TMB. OK, the digital PA has TMB on all channels, but my guitar sounded "harsh" again.
Then browsing Thomann's pages, I found this Art tube pre amp, no batteries and so many different "hook up" options, XLR & 1/4" jacks in and out, much more clean gain than I will ever need, plus, this little black box really smooths out my guitar sound, harshness all gone.
It works great on the Microphone too, so I may need another.

OK, I got another now (that's 2), second one for my mic, I have a couple of nice mic's needing phantom power. The ART pre amp has cured my digital (no phantom power) blues and brought back my old ribbon microphones which work well with my "old" voice, and no batteries.

A Great PreAmp for your portable H4n recorder!
22.09.2014
My intention with this preamp was to boost the sound I get from my Tram TR50 lavalier microphone since my portable recorder's (Zoom H4n, which I purchased from here) preamp just doesn't cut it...

This preamp really boosts the sound without adding any annoying hiss, bum or other electronical noise which the Zoom H4n did when you increased the recording volume.

I record with recording level of 60 in my Zoom H4n (some sources suggest you do not exceed reecording levels of 70 or you will get too much noise) and I use this preamp with the output gain about in the middle between the infinity-sign and the first white line.

For the input I put the knob to the first white line and the sound is amazing for my microphone! I also use the 20+ dB feature, and I use the phantom power this preamp provides since my mic needs it.

It is obviously not the best preamp and there is no on/off-button, you have to unplug the cable. Also, you cannot turn off the phantom power so be careful so do you not feed phantom power to units that don't need it.

Finally; when you combine this preamp with recorders, make sure you turn off the phantom power for your recorders as this preamp will provide you with 48v phantom power.

I turned off my phantom power in my Zoom H4n before I connected it to this preamp to be on the safe side.

A very good benefit for using an external preamp instead of a portable recorder's inbuilt preamp is not only the features and quality but also saving battery time.

For some reason, I get a lot of hiss and hum if I use the cable to the portable recorders so I have to rely on batteries and this preamp saves me battery time since it is connected to my outlet and provides all phantom power for my mic.

This preamp does its job and I am looking forward to invest in higher ends later in the future. Thanks for the fast delivery, Thomann! :-)

P.S. When you monitor the sound you get from this preamp with your H4n, you may hear some noise, but this is not included in the recording so don't worry!

Second time purchasing it
DimitriosB, 17.03.2017
I use this for preamping vocals, acoustic guitars and my KORG ms20. It works better for the latter. It adds lots of noise to my acoustic guitar but that might be unrelated to the TubeMP.

I have purchased the same device some years ago but it stopped working after half a year for unknown reasons. Nevertheless, I bought it again because I really enjoy the warmth it adds to my signal. The effect can range from transparent to distorted signal, so there's plenty of room to experiment.

I'ts OK
Rick 18, 14.02.2015
You get a lot for your money, not because it sounds so great but because it's quite cheap and the housing is excellent quality. I'm thinking about upgrading the valve in it, I read that many of these preamps come with cheap valves in them.

Economic and effective
Funky Thang, 16.04.2015
I use the pre amp for my Rhodes Mark II. It?s probably not perfect but it definitely gets more gain and sounds warmer because of the tube and its overtones. It?s a little noisy but in a acceptable range. Overall I don?t regret having bought this piece of hardware. For the Rhodes I replaced it now with GAP Pre-73 DLX which is awesome and without any noise. Still, I will most probably use the Art Tube MP with Mics.

Points that i like about this product:
1. The output signal is clean and has no disturbance.
2. It can be used for instrument and microphone.
3. It works well as a d.i box for active/passive instruments.
4. Its good for condenser microphones due to phantom power.
5. The build quality is very good and strong.
6. The price point is very good.
7. the tube really makes a huge difference to the tone.its give significant fatness to the tone.

Points I dont like:
1. The power supply is DC, so it cannot be put into a loop chain.

Decent bit of kit
LordBidlington, 27.01.2014
Does the job for an excellent price. No UK plug or adapter but Thomann sent me an adapter free of charge.

Fairly easy to use, it took a little while to dial in a nice sound but definitely doable.

I use it with a Line 6 Tone port UX2, into my PC and recording with Reaper. Mics used: Behringer C2 and t. bone MB 45. Also used it with a Shadow SH 2000 piezo pickup for mandolin and acoustic guitar, and the onboard electronics on a Tanglewood TW 145 guitar. All the above sounded good, the valve obviously does something as it sounds crisp and warm.

Overall, highly recommended. I'll be taking it to a few open mic nights so hopefully it'll hold out!

Versatile purchase for a home studio
Eoghan, 18.09.2013
I've actually got two of these now! Primarily have used it as a vocal Pre-amp for a number of years in recording applications. Have preffered results using this on male voice to some of the joe meek models available. It does have little 'tone darkness' which works very well at times but doesn't suit female voice as well.
As an instrument Pre-Amp it really does work well on clean electric guitar, and bass. Nice bass tone with fender models in particular. Can also be used as a signal splitter in the recording chain - not as pure as a dedicated splitter but will work.

Great little preamp for the price
Nerz, 28.05.2017
These are a good preamp for the price.

I would recommend changing the cheap generic 12AX7 tube inside for a better quality one. This will add some quality to the 'valve' sound that is present in more expensive preamps.

There is phantom power, phase switching and tube warmth that come with this little preamp.

The separate power supply is a bit of an annoyance but at this price point, it's a minor flaw.

Overall, a good product with grate potential.

Sounds great looks great!
César José dos, 02.04.2014
This little preamp is a pearl. I love it. In fact I own two of them and I am wondering why don't I have a dozen! I also have two ART Tube MP Studio, just for the VU meter. It puts out a great warm sound, it has the essencial tweaks you could need: XLR and 1/4" inputs and outputs, phantom power, phase reversal, +20db gain, input and output controls. And, of course, a tube to spice up your sound.

Positive - The best thing about this product is the sound and portability. Very light but very sturdy - and the metal housing makes all the difference when you are going to take this to shows or recording sessions. To top this, the ART tube MP has a simple and beautiful design. Comes with a power supply from the product brand, so I expect it to last longer than some no brand stuff.

Negative - It should come in a transport box just for extra protection, because it's a tube thing made to be portable. And tubes are fragile stuff.

great box, very flexible
Andrea696, 28.05.2013
This very small box represent outstanding value for money. It offers a lot of flexibility and will serve you well as a preamp for microphones. Where it absolutely shines, however, is in my opinion as a valve DI box. This thing is great to add thickness when recording bass guitar direct. Also very good on piezo acoustic guitars. Highly recommended!

Nice preamp/DI for the price
DominikZ, 18.12.2016
Bought this mic preamp primarily to use as a cheap preamp/DI for my acoustic guitar.
This box puts out a lot of gain, which is great, but keep in mind that at higher gain settings it gets quite noisy.
Better quality mic preamps tend to stay quiet at equivalent gain, but on the other hand also cost way more.
All in all it is a useful piece of kit on the cheap.

Useful Tool
Sonicsyringe, 10.01.2017
Handy to add warmth as a DI for bass or for acoustic and/or clean electric guitar, but also good when overdriven for a kind of fuzzy crunch. Wouldn't recommend it as a vocal mic pre unless you're after a very particular effect: Once it's on there, there's no taking it off!

Can be a little noisy, but easy to use and great value for money.

Nice as a character option compared to a cleaner DI/preamp.

Sturdy little preamp for home studio
mestahh, 15.05.2018
I purchased this preamp for having +48V phantom power for my condenser mic. I then started to use it for guitars and bass too as it adds a nice tube sound to everything. I can only recommend this.

Good preamp for adding a little taste to recordings
Zo Rock, 02.06.2017
Very nice to have this, I like to add little tube saturation to all my microphone recordings, specially when recording vocals or guitars. I changed the stock chinese preamp tube to Electro Harmonix, just a personal preference and its less noisy.

nice to have as a complementary pre-amp
18.06.2016
it adds something to the sound,
i like it with harsh sounding sources (cymbals, bright guitar)
the only things i did miss a bit is that the tube wont go into a musical overdrive it sounds like solidstate clipping when you push it into the red so it itsn't designed to do that.
but as an standard mic pre it functions very well!!
a lot of gain on tap!!

A decent preamp for the price
30.08.2014
For what I paid for it, I was expecting a really poor quality preamp, but it's surprisingly good. The sound is clear and uncoloured, it looks good, and it's small enough to fit pretty much anywhere.

I've used it for recording guitars (acoustic, electric, bass), vocals, and drums, and it's well-rounded to have worked good enough for all of them, at least at a demo quality. The Art Tube really amplified any guitar buzz, and it was REALLY good at picking up room noises, so you'll need to use it in conjunction with some good acoustic treatment, but if you want a decent preamp without breaking the bank, it's worth every penny.

Cheap and cheerful
01.01.2015
I bought this ART Tube pre-amp as my Line 6 Pod doesn't supply phantom power and I needed to power a large condenser mic for recording. I ended up not using the POD at all because the ART alone was giving me a far superior quality of recording than when through the POD. Excellent pre-amp, ideal for first home studio!

Keenly-priced tube pre-amp
Michael Nelson, 06.08.2013
I bought this for my sister to give her boyfriend as a birthday present. He uses it to DI his bass guitar to his laptop for demo recording purposes, and also as a preamp for his SM58 for recording his acoustic guitar. He tells me that the sound is much better than he achieved before (without a preamp!) For this price, I don't think you can go wrong.
